iHasFish
hey all. I am taking a week off in october and I have been researching some areas in the georgian bay or tobermory area for some backcountry camping with steelhead opportunities. was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. I'm tired of camping on lakes in Algonquin. I want to sleep next to a clear running stream with big trout on my line. thanks for any info you may have. kevin
There are several small flows up that way that get fish, but it's all timing. I used to fish up that way quite a bit while living in Owen Sound, and most are hit and miss. The smaller flows on the Bruce are hit and miss. Better off staying on the larger rivers.....Saugeen, Ausable, Sydenham, Bighead, Notty
CLofchik
In that part of Ontario any stream that gets a decent run of fish will probably be private for all it's fishable length. For that you'd have to head up to Superior...then you get lot's of Crown Land, solitude & fish.
The Ketchican Kid
My cottage is In Tobermory and i can say that there is no point fishing those streams in the fall. Not enough water and certainly not worth the drive.
jordanl
I reccommend going up to algoma country north of sault saint marie, tons of crownland between the soo and wawa, almost any stream that goes to the lake will have steelhead, and almost all the major streams have crownland for most of the fishable waters, all you need is a camping permit, and your set
CLofchik
If you are a resident of Ontario, you don't need a permit to camp on Crown Land.
frog088
If you are a resident of Ontario, you don't need a permit to camp on Crown Land You are correct...but so is jordan, as I'm sure he is referring to Superior Provincial Park which does in fact requires a camping permit. Splakin
At iHasFish, what are you talking about? Tired of camping on lakes in Algonquin Park? I'm headed there this week-end for one last trout mayham. Trout outta there are so beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge steelheader too, but the solitude in the interoir and fish quality are second to none. 3 trips a year interoir is what keeps me sane lol. iHasFish
Not that I'm tired of it. I just haven't tried back country camping anywhere else but in Algonquin. Specifically opeongo. I've done it 3 times a year for the last few years. and am in need of a change of scenery. Steelhead are my favorite to catch and October is the best time to catch them in my mind. So I figured I'd try it. so far I am looking at agawa river in lake superior park. I'd backpack and hike my way up river starting from the trans Canada, and Camp in a few different spots along the way. Thanks for all the help BTW

Icehut
Think about Michigan. Spectacular, world-class water, some of it open 365.
JoeSchmoe
Adirondack Park- NY State. Lots of rivers to choose from there... after you get your out of state license, you don't need to worry about camping permits, booking sites, etc... just find a site on this map and you're good. The Ausable is supposedly good, but I'm not sure about the camping. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html
herodrift
Aside from the fishing part of things, I would definitely recommend going some other time to enjoy the backpacking on the Bruce Peninsula. I have backpacked that section of the Bruce Trail and stayed at both backcountry sites in the BP National Park. The views are great from the trail along the escarpment. But it's not the place to go looking for steelhead. Go another time for the hiking. Your trip idea sounds fantastic though! I haven't combined backpacking and fishing yet. Please post a report of your trip! I might look to plan something similar for myself next year.

I've been canoeing Crown Land for years, some of the best bass fishing in Ontario and with only a portage or two you'll have a lake all to yourself. You'll never go back to a PP again. This. A few of these. Get you here. Catch this.

Just while I'm falling asleep. It's hard to let go of the shackles of modern living. You have to go North of Anstruther to get into the good bass fishing! Oh, and I suppose it would be mean to text her this pic out of the blue?

A few of these. Get you here. Catch this. I'm Heading up again this year. Last year I stayed on Crab lake and the fishing sucked, but the lake I put in on (wolf lake) was fantastic, but there's no camping on it. I was wondering if you could PM this beauty of a lake? Thanks man
CLofchik
Wolf is good, but the GREAT fishing is on the lakes north of Anstruther I don't get away as much as I'd like to lately, but I've been back country fishing everywhere between Muskoka & French River. More great fishing than you can manage in a lifetime, and all free as long as you have a canoe, tent, and map. PM sent.
