smerchly
I was told today that if you buy a new TV you will be charged a "eco" fee . Walmart has a RCA 32" LED on sale for $170. ....seems like a good deal . The guy picked one up and went to pay for it and was charged the reg. 13% hst PLUS a $40 eco fee ! It is just another tax ! He told the cashier they can keep it .....not their fault , but I would do the same . Has anyone here paid this crazy fee for a TV ? Do they inform you before you get to the cash out ? I will buy one used or from the U.S . before paying that extra tax .
rickyy33
Yea, I've paid it lol. Depends where you buy they normally tell you, also fee's Applied to items such as printers, faxes, computers. Deal with a am n pop place and they'll wave it. Lundtastic
If they waive it, you're paying for it in the price anyways. It's a gov't tax just like HST. Wynne needs a new pair of jogging shoes.....or some new windmills in Wainfleet. No avoiding death and taxes. And in the end when you turn in your "e waste" the company collecting the items make money of the Au and Ag and other PM's that are in the circuitry. Wynne Wynne. Not. Chrisb
If you take your e-waste to the right place they will pay you. last time I took some in it was $.10 a pound. That can add up if you have an old large heavy tube TV. International Marine Salvage on Elm in Port Colborne is one place I know of.
smerchly
My mistake....the TV is on sale at Walmart for $169 . I checked on line and there is an advisory that electronics are subject to an eco fee ( spelled tax) . Paying $40 extra on $169 is completely off the wall and just plain consumer robbery ! Between the 25% eco tax & 13% hst we pay 37% more for this TV ! It is no wonder why so many Canadians cross the big river to increase their buying power . If you buy from Ebay I'm sure you can skip the eco TAX .
Chrisb
Apparently they are flat rate fees not a percentage. here is a listing I found. Check out the fee for floor standing printers. smerchly
Thanks for breakdown Chris .....my percent remark is based on the approximate percentage on the $169 base price . Maybe it's time to be honest with consumers and add all taxes and eco fees right on the sticker since that 's what we pay at the cash register . Instead of seeing the price of a 32" TV at $199.99 ...we would see the real price at $199.99 +$26 GST +$40 (eco) = " $ 266.00" ( rounded off to the nearest 5 cents) . Would that scare buyers away ? Buying a car is even worse for deceptive pricing , but we Canucks are so easy to fool ......
