Lakeside Carp

I was thinking about fishing into the lake for carp. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Maybe a type of rig that can withstand the waves, type of bait/chum for lake water, how far to get my bait out? Things of that nature? I've already got a spot in mind, the lake is the lake! haha

That's exactly what I was thinking. PVA will chum my exact area and it shouldn't move around too much. Thanks! Never used PVA before, would rather test my skills in this area in a calm spot. We'll see!

I have seen guys using sling shots to get the bait out a good distance . I like the chum to spread out more than a pva bag , but I guess you could toss out more bags . I like the cream corn mixed with some oats & make a semi dry mix . I found this cheap method to make your own "tosser" to get corn & mixed chum out to where you want to fish like 100 ft.or more .....take another rod or use your carp rod before rigging up .

In this video he uses the top of a water bottle .........I would use the bottom half to load up a cup of corn or mix at each toss.......

I just started using PVA this year and, yup, I too was surprised how quickly PVA disolves after getting wet.

My bag touched the water accidentaly while I was about to cast, and by the time I had wound up and gave it a fling, the bag opened up and the bait sprayed everywhere. Ooops.

When the lake is less choppy I am definitely going out there! I use a slingshot because it spreads it out but it makes a mess 1/5 times.
I have to check out PVA for sure. Thanks for the tips guys

Living near the lake i walk it regularly. More luck in the summer before th3 dog days of heat ... you see them moving around 15 to 30 feet from shore.

also a few spots in the spring where they spawn and there are hundreds at a time. Didnt fish them but watched. Just need to put some legwork in.

historically i havent seen many once the fall comes looking into the water but it doesnt mean they arent there just a little deeper.

makes total sense snags. thanks for the report. I will have to think about chumming the area. Wouldn't it move around in the waves? Or even beach it all to be eaten by birds!

I went carping yesterday .....cloudy , SW wind , water murky , bottom cluttered with algae & leaves.....got 3 carp from 8 to 12 lbs ....not a bad day . Carp were finicky ...small bites , barely bending the tip of the rod , except one that hit hard .

I went back today ....same spot ....mostly sunny , NW wind, water clear , bottom cluttered , got no fish . Extra finicky bites...barely moving the tip of the rod ....tried setting the hook a few times while the rod tip moved about an inch or so . Still getting lots of crap on the hook & sinker from the bottom . I'm still wondering if the bites were carp ? :dunno: If they were carp , they weren't very hungry or didn't like Green Giant corn ....Me thinks they were gun shy in the clearer water & sunny skies......just mouthing the corn but not in the feeding mode today ......

.....any input from fellow carpers ?

Regarding wind, Smerch, was the more productive day when the wind was in your face?

I find when winds are blowing towards shore, the 'catching' is usually better. I always found this with other fish, but was surprised when it also applied to the carp. There's just something about a stirred up shoreline that seems to get all fish going.

On the other matter of figuring out what's nudging your baits, well, that's the million dollar question. On a slow day, I always like to imagine it's a big 30lb carp! It helps me keep my head in the game. LOL

Thanks Mike......I think you are right about the wind change . The first day ( 3 carp),the wind was blowing in to shore & off shore yesterday . The barometer prob.changed also and the lake water is cooler than the pond . I'm sure those "nudges" weren't gobies or small perch etc. they tend to get the corn of the hair rig . The corn stayed on after many nudges .There's a YTube video showing a school of carp picking up the corn & dropping it until one decided it was lunch time . If I had some alternate baits to use I might have caught some fish . The bottom slime & leaves didn't help either . Next trip , I'll take some bread balls , corn , worms , blue cheese salad dressing , Frank's hot sauce, and a radio with some carping music......

I have always caught my carp on days with overcast and also days where it rained a couple days before. That's my focus anyway. I watched some carp feeding videos and the carp can be extremely picky at times. They pick it up and spit it out all day long. They either love it or hate it. Try many different baits and chum next time. Whatever they bite on I like to focus my efforts obviously. I have never paid close attention to pressure or wind direction, I just put bait in the water! :santa: that's exciting though, 3 carp in cold water! I have always found the bite to be slow in cold water so way to go.

The bite was slow in a way ......3 carp in 3 hrs. Some time was lost checking the hook for algae & leaves every 10 min.average . The puffed corn may work since it is buoyant & may not collect so much bottom stuff . This carp weighed about 10 lbs .& as you can see the corn is still intact after a good battle of the minds ! :santa: ....I used a big leaf bag for a landing mat .

Way to go Smerch! And a beautiful specimen that one.

There is also some bouyant plastic corn available to help keep your presentation off bottom. Adding a kernel or two to your presentation may help keep your hook away from the alge and leaves. Also there are various pop up boillies on the market in lots of colours and flavours and they're extremely bouyant.

PS.. Love the improvised landing mat!
