ron4blues
I can remember my uncle sitting in my granparent's kitchen watching the apple tree outside with his .30-30 propped next to the door. Deer would come along to browse the fallen apples. Uncle would grab the rifle, ease the door open, take a 30 yard shot and that would be it. He got a couple of bears that way too. That of course was on a farm surrounded by Cape Breton forest where the closest neighbor was my great uncle two miles away. Can't do that any more. smerchly
I have a 30' red delicious apple tree in my yard ....loaded this year ! I may need to borrow a cross bow (silent) and a long distant deer call to invite them for a tasty treat! When I moved here in 81 the back yard was a 10 acre corn field complete with fall geese and deer .....not any more ! The "never sprayed" apples are in good shape this year so I rigged up a long pole with a hook to drop the apples in a tarp without bruising ....extension ladder , 16' will not reach the best apples which are good & sweet for eating , and pies , etc. .................................................................................................................................................................................. edit ....posted this in the wrong mode ...hope it can be read ..... ron4blues
Nothing as good as a cold, crisp, juicy red delicious! I'll bet deer love them. And raccoons, squirrels, skunks, possums . . .
smerchly
Nothing as good as a cold, crisp, juicy red delicious! I'll bet deer love them. And raccoons, squirrels, skunks, possums . . . Yes ......mostly squirrels and birds like jays , grackles & sparrows that have eaten many apples . The ground falls will attract possums and even rats . Earlier this year a family of voles were dining on them ....put out the cheese and arsenic pellets and put them out of business ....including a lone rat this is what I pick up every day since it attracts the yellow jackets which I give a lovely bath of sunlight dish soap/water which dispatched them in 5 seconds !
