Helped clean up a strip of road just down from a QEW off-ramp. Frenchman's creek runs down this strip just 10 yards from the road. It is important fish habitat and along with the thoughtless slobs who throw their highway trash out the window; this spot is lucky enough to be along a major route to the dump just 2 minutes away. People who don't cover or tie down there load contribute to the mess there.

Niagara Christian College sent about 30 kids to help clean up for Earth Day. The extra help saved the Friends of Fort Erie's Creeks about 2 hours of work :D . When they were done a half dozen of them stayed to help us plant 6 cedar trees. As far as clean ups go this is a good time of year to do it because of the absence of cattails, mosquitoes etc.

Not sure what they were but two very large fish jumped and scared the crap out of me while reaching for garbage. Since they riffled the dam last winter they may actually of been spawning pike :D
If you say shut up and fish then shut the hell up when they tell you that you can't fish anymore!

Had to work all day. But we did collect a few bags of recyclables at work to save them from the garbage.

When I'm out I try to utilize "best practices." I strip my smokes and put the butts in my pocket til I get somewhere to dispose of them properly. If I have any trash, candy wrappers, etc, it goes into my pockets too. When I'm fishing, any waste line goes into the same pocket. So you might say I "do" something every day, even if it doesn't seem like much. It adds up over time.

This earth day is just another PR gimmick. One day to pick up after yourselves and hope it atones for the other 364 days of the year that we are slobs. Every day should be Earth Day.

I agree but it is also a day to reach out (it's almost mandatory in the schools so run with it) to those who have no environmental conscience. The kids I worked with really don't know any better for the most part and perhaps their parents were just too busy to pass down any ethics. There were a few who had a genuine concern but others were just out there to get out of class. Well now we have them cornered. What you demonstrate to them in that small time frame can have an impact if you approach it right.

Earth day is also harvest time for community groups. This is their Christmas where they can earn their operating funds and attract new members. With it being spring and new growth just starting to emerge and last years mess newly exposed from the receding snow the timing is right to say "look at the mess we've made; let's make a difference". Earth day is not intended to target you and I who already have a concern, it's a time to coax the other side while they are actually paying attention. Come next week we won't have their ear anymore.

We sat in the dark for an hour or two at school.
Everyone has to believe in something........ I believe I will go fishing.

Earth Day is now also a corporate registered trade mark with all the corporate trimmings. In other words. Someone is making money by making the public feel guilty about itself. All those products with the logo are bought and paid for. Try using the logo without express permission. Lawyers start crawling out of the woodwork.
