Hey guys; you know what season it is right? Wild Turkey season. It's also a good time to ask permission for access to property for deer season. If you don't know the landowner personally where you want to hunt and even adjacent properties where you might have to track your kill then it's important to build a relationship before deer season opens in October or Novembers for the shotgun guys.

We had quite a bit of excitement last year when 9 men decided to just start shooting on private property without getting consent first. In fact my son and I found ourselves in great danger as these gents started shooting all around us because they just didn't realize we were there. Can you imagine how turned off of hunting the property owners get when this happens to them while they are trying to enjoy their own land? Ya let's take our grandkids for a walk out back and suddenly find ourselves in a war zone.

We gave these gents some heat and ruined their day but they got off real easy last season. One of them actually came back for the second hunt and asked for permission the day of the hunt. DENIED! Guess they just don't get it. The guy who does give them a bottle at Christmas and shares some of his game and does a few odd jobs around the farm gets the permission. The guy who shows up with a gun dressed in camo and a chip on his shoulder does not and it's that simple.

I will be working on some alternative properties because we now have a few really decent hunters that share the land where I hunt and we keep in touch so we don't walk right under each others stand and scare away that shot we've been so patiently waiting. I will approach these new property owners now for deer and migratory bird season. During that season I will be approaching land owners for permission for turkey season. It's simple, make friends, consider the value of land use and compensate accordingly. No I don't know pay the farmer; I mean do him a few favours, have a few drinks and get to know each other. Perhaps he will be asking you to ask those poachers to leave his property next year and then your in :D
If you say shut up and fish then shut the hell up when they tell you that you can't fish anymore!
