Well the guest speaker at the Friends of Fort Erie's Creeks tonight was very relevant here. Melisa Young has me convinced our very own Doctor Feelgood (ironic isn't it) has Lyme disease. Doc I can't believe you chose baseball over your own health tonight; you missed a very informative presentation but all is not lost. As posted before (click here) there will be two more screenings of an informative documentary (under our skin) about Lyme disease and what I learned tonight was well above the common knowledge I had ever known AND.................................... I'm still very itchy!

This is a must see for outdoors people and I'd be sad not to see that library packed on the 12th 6pm and 24th 7pm at the FEPL Crystal Ridge branch on Ridge Road. Those dates are easy to remember for all you beer drinkers out there (12 and 24) . What would be even sadder is if no members of the medical profession showed up because currently very few of our local doctors know anything about Lyme much less even know how to spell it. If you contract Lyme in Niagara your hard pressed to get help. The May 24 screening has a Q&A by a specialist afterward.

IMPORTANT!!!! Melisa is trying to compile a list of all residents throughout Niagara who have been diagnosed or suspected they had Lyme disease. She would love to build a data base and share stories and hell I'd even host a subforum for it here on NFN for free if it helps people receive the proper testing. So if you know anyone who fits that bill send them to Melisa's blog and hopefully we'll have her email up here soon so we can easily communicate.

Doc you only need $500 to get the appropriate test to either diagnose or rule out Lyme and I think a swill would be a good fundraiser to achieve that. There's a catch though. You have to help me arrange it where'd that sticky go?

One more do you know? Only 10% of children who get Lyme display a rash and as few as 30-50% of adults experience a bulls-eye or any rash at all? Tell your doctor that just because you didn't get a bulls-eye rash doesn't mean you don't have Lyme. Tell him the standard practices of detecting Lyme are currently insufficient and that he or she needs to view this medical documentary!

I'd just like to add one more thing. The bacteria that causes Lyme disease is incredibly evasive and smart and can hide by leaving your bloodstream burrowing into your brain hiding within your cells thus making it very difficult to detect. Learn more about the bacteria and bring some schooling to doctor with all his degrees and certificates and perhaps the word of humiliation will get around and the docs will get on the ball.

Dan, I appreciate what you have done and you will forever have a spot in my heart. Yes, I did chose ball over health, but after being sick so long with so many different tests and diagnosis's, I have pretty much given up. I will be taking all the info you sent me to my dr on Tuesday and I'm sure Anita will not let me out of there without getting the referral that was suggested.

Thank you for this post. I don't think i would of ever come across that link for canlyme.
my wife has been suffering from most of the symptoms for the disease, but has been getting tested for other things, that are coming back negative. she is now going to get a test for lyme. she's been bit by ticks before, but never thought nothing about it. the bush behind her parents house is infested with ticks, the dog has at least one a week.

MK you should see this movie before she gets the test. The whole point of this post is that because doctors are using insufficient testing procedures. There are far to few specialist who can recognize the signs

Black Legged Tick Establishes Foothold

The problem with that article is they suggest it has a foothold in the Wainfleet bog so it suggests that is the only spot. deer ticks are also in Port Colbourn, Fort Erie etc. It also states that the disease starts out as a bulls eye or circular rash but we now know that less than 50% of Lyme patients ever got the rash and less then 10% of children do either. The doctor will tell you if you didn't have the rash you don't have Lyme. This leaves you helpless!

You have got to see that documentary; it will anger you because it is politics in medicine that leaves people untreated while rich men line their pockets!

Hi all! Great job here "chilli"...
Ok, so here's how it goes with Canadian testing....you insist on a Lyme test...the Dr. requests a Lyme serology test. The Labs use a 2 tiered testing system here in Canada. They first do an ELISA test...if your blood does not show enough positive indications of Borrelia B - you fail to be tested with the 2nd test, the Westen Blot and are SCREENED out. You count as a negative when in fact you could be positive. The Western Blot test is the test most MD's in the US use to test for Bb - and they even state that IT IS NOT ACCURATE!
So, in Canada we use the lesser of the two tests which ends up screening out patients. Your Dr. doesn't see the results, which might get their curiosity up because most likely there will be positive bands showing...just not enough to allow your blood to be tested with the Western Blot. Your Dr. gets a piece of paper that states "positive" or "negative".

Now, do I need to explain why we have so few cases of Lyme disease reported here in Canada....?
I am being treated for 3rd stage Lyme disease. Just diagnosed finally in Nov of 2009. My story goes back to 2002.
The specialist who diagnosed me received (from me...not from my physician) all of my medical history dating back to 2002. My diagnosis is clinical. My case doesn't count in Canada. If you'd like to read my story please visit:

By the way I'll bet you didn't know that a patient can be diagnosed and treated for sero-negative Rheumatoid arthritis...!

The question is why is the bacterial infection so hard to detect?
