I travel the QEW a few days a week. I have notice for a while that Toronto is shipping garbage into or thru the Niagara region. In fact I counted 17 trucks between Stoney Creek and Mississauga. I tried to find out where it was going everything I read said Michigan or London now last I check going thru Niagara is not the fastest way to either. I was wondering if anyone knows where it is headed.

Could be any of several old quarries or pit mines, but there is a standing contract for disposal in Michigan. A few reasons for not using Detroit: 1) undetermined loads can't use tunnel. 2) much quicker clearing the border in Buffalo. 3) many states have different trucking regulations pertaining to size and weight of load, travel restrictions, etc.... 4) there is a lot of opposition in Michigan to our garbage train. Running Toronto trash through Detroit would be politically costly.

They are trying to open a compost facility in a quarry south of Beamsville, but there is still a lot of opposition to taking in Toronto trash.

If I remember hearing correctly, michigan has an axle restriction. One fleet I dealt with, dedicated their tandem trailers with a ten ft spread for the michigan runs only.

michigan is multi axle friendly, I hauled 6 axle trailers there for years, 110,000 lbs, but the tandem axle flatbeds were normally the ten foot spread, or sometimes called michigan spread, the weight allowances in michigan are different, and the spread tandem allows for better weight distribution, and a better ride IMO. it's weird. you can be 1500 lbs overweight in michigan, cross the border, and be legal. Not that i have ever done that, i was very picky on my axle weights. and it's paid off, 10 years on the road, and a clean CVOR.
