I'll go out on a limb and say it's the flowers of a Catalpa tree.

They do look a bit like catalpa, but not yellowish enough and it is too early in the year for them in these parts by about 5-6 weeks.

I'm going to say it's your magical Chinese Empress tree aka Royal Paulownia

Forgot about that one , the tree that grows a foot a week. My next guess was going to be wisteria, obviously wrong as well :)

Northern Catalpa, of which we are almost their northern limit will bloom mid June with a blossom very similar in appearance to a Gloxinia blossom. Really quite beautiful to look at.

I tend to mark the seasons with the tree blossoms. When I see the Magnolias I know Spring is here. The Catalpa marks the Summer. When I see the chestnuts bearing fruit (nuts actually) I know the Fall is upon us.

The Catalpa is without a question one of my favorites. I am also very partial to cherry blossoms, which are another early splash of color.

Before the cherries break out. Golden currants explode in a dazzling burst of colour and a heady aroma that screws up my sinuses in 30secs. One of my favourite flowering shrubs to propagate.

I have two of these trees. One in the back which is just a regular tree now.
And the one in the front which I cut down each year to see it shoot up
between 15-18 feet a season depending on the weather. The warmer temps 70+
help it shoot up much quicker. The second picture was taken a few weeks ago, cool temps
slows the growing mode, but once it warms up....

I will post a seperate thread of my amazing plant and keep it updated during the season.
