Hi guys :)

Thought I'd introduce myself. Been lurking for a short while.

My name is Tim, I moved from Norway to Canada not long ago. Currently living in Thorold with my gf. Been fishing most of my life, everything from deep sea competitions to ultralite fly fishing for brown trout and everything in between. I just like to get out and fish, whatever the method, not to fuzzy. However, except for a few species like pike, trout, salmon and a few others N. American fishing is very different from Scandinavian fishing so you guys can pretty much treat me like a newbie. At the moment I have more than enough work just learning all the species we don't have in Norway and their season and bag limit etc ;)

Also did my first serious recon around the south end (Bruce trail?? towards Allanburg) of Lake Gibson the other day. Found some spots but not as many as I was hoping for. Lots of vegetation along the banks making it a bit difficult with the type of gear I brought over from Norway. Maybe the north end or the ponds got more and better spots? Gonna do some more scouting and I will probably ask here for decent spots around the lake.

For practical reasons I only packed a limited selection of gear. Mostly float/waggler/match equipment. Been waggler fishing a lot in the last years, maybe I'm becoming lazy as I'm getting older :D Sure is nice to relax on a fishing lounger watching the float. Anyway, I need to pay a visit to a tackle shop to get some needed gear I couldn't bring over, and of course for bait. Spam away if you can recommend a good tackle shop :)

Sooo, yeah, this is me saying hi to all. I'm pretty sure I will ask questions around here that many of you will think are beyond newbie but pls bear with me, I'll try to be a fast learner :)

cheers
Tim

Welcome Tim! Norway is a beautiful country, i have a few friends from the tromso area and the sandnes area who have been here and camped with me on Gibson, they were amazed when they seen their first big Musky. Good luck in finding your spot, and hope to see many reports from our newest Scandinavian member!

welcome to the forum Tim

no doubt you are finding the fishing a little different here, than in your homeland. fishing is fishing no matter where you live, but learning species, keep limits and season caps won't take you long at all. in fact, if you look at the top of the forum, there's a sticky with a direct link to the regs, so you can look them over and see what information you need to know.

as far as Gibson goes, the north shores are the best as far as access to fishing spots. the East end of the ponds are the best for float fishing for Bass, Carp and smaller pan fish such as Bluegill and sunfishes. Marlatts Rd is a very good location for thes types of fish and is at the end of Collier Rd. if you go West on Beaverdams or Decew, you'll come to the ponds at Merrittville highway. there's some decent size cats in there, plus pike, spotted Gar, Muskie and I've even heard of trout in there, although I've never seen one pulled out personally.

you are deffinitely in the right region as far as species to fish for. pretty much anything you can imagine is around here. deffinitely head down to the Niagara River, as you will find larger game fish in that water. if you want to go out fishing any time, just PM me and I'll go out with you....................show you a few spots around there. or if you like, you can come to the Niagara River with me and a buddy of mine and we'll show you our secret spot that always gets nice sized Bass, Drum and I've even caught a 46" Muskie out of that spot.

again, welcome to the forum and I look forward to seeing reports and pics as you explore our wonderful water systems and everything they have to offer.

Norway fishing is probably better than what we have here since the Grass is always greener on the other side.

No need to spend too much money when you are just starting out, you need a 6.5 or 7' stiffest rod you can buy within your budget, Another $50 reel, lightest possible reel for the price you are willing to pay and you are good to go. You can start with Mono line, if you are tight on a budget for Braided line. The visibility of mono is actually very close to flurocarbon line.

Once you get more used to the feel of fishing , You might consider longer rod at least 9-12 ft length especially fishing during late fall or winter months. Since there are salmon and steelheads in the river. You still can catch these fish , just a lot more work on your part if you are only using 7ft rod.

During summer months fishing before 10am and after 5:00pm is the best.

Thanks sottedGARRR. Yeah Norway is beautiful but so is Canada. Two very similar countries in many ways but also very different. Hehe, size comes to mind ;) Been to both Sandnes and Tromsų. Sandnes is the "Oil capital" of Norway. Tromsų is up north, cold but with some amazing fishing opportunities.

Hi hammercarp. Been checking these guys out and I will for sure join and enter some tournaments after I get around to buying more varied gear. Right now I am a bit limited to waggler/float fishing. I figured from their website that they mixed it up a bit when it comes to depth/gear/method.

Can you go all the way to the end of Marlatts and park there for easier access to the whole north/east side of Gibson?

Sounds awsome Rich :) I'll probably take you up on that offer as soon as I return from Peter's with some needed gear.

Actually, I don't think many countries in the world beats Canada when it comes to fishing opportunities.

Do you guys call these "River rods" something special? Or just multi purpose heavy duty rods?

Aside from Denis (not to put him off, I haven't even met him yet), there's also Erie Trackers in Port Colborne, and Peter's in St. Catharines, the second of which I haven't been yet.

To argue with fishfight a bit, I came up here from the southern US, and only brought along a 6'0 medium light, a 6'6 medium, and a 5'6 light rod. Basic tackle of divers, spinners, jigs, hooks, sinkers and floats (we call them corks, as they all were once made of cork down there). I'd say no less than 10 pound on a medium rod, little lighter on lighter gear. But if you're fishing for pike or muskie, the one thing you have to remember is STEEL LEADERS.

Other than that, pretty much any gear will work. I wouldn't spend money on expensive lures if you're fishing in weeds. And I live in Thorold too, so if you ever want to check out a few places, let me know. I'm always up for a fishing trip. Just PM me.
Early to bed, early to rise. Fish all day, and make up lies.

Welcome, Velkommen, Mieluinen. Once you start travelling north of Waubushene the land starts looking a lot like home. That's what my grandparents loved about Ontario. Just like in Suomi and Sverige

Keep it simple, The niagara river is a big river and you can spend countless hours on it fishing for anything that swims practically. There's no need for heavy equipment yet. Have fun grab a spinning rod some tubes, twisters a couple spinners and a dozen worms and you'll have fun ;)
