Hey everyone!
I am planning a road camping trip from Chicago to Niagara falls and maybe toronto sometime in September but I'm having trouble finding information on fishing.
1.How and where can I get a fishing license? is there a license for just a few days or a week?
2.I cannot find a baitshop in Niagara, is there one? And are they nice and helpful to newbies in the area like me?
3.What kind of fish might I find in the area? I'm mostly a bass fisherman and salmon/trout in season. Can I find that here?
4.Where would you suggest a good place to camp and fish is in the area? I prefer "drive up" as opposed to hiking to a spot.
5.Anything I should know fishing/camping for the first time in canada?

Thanks for any help and if any of you ever come to chicago I can show you all the great spots for bass and salmon!!!

Aj

as for bait shops, there are two in the area................FishnNiagara and Peter's Tackle. they both have sites on the net. they will be more than helpful in tipping you for the local hotspots. if you get to know the guys on the forum, I am sure that they will share some of their secrets with you, so you can have a productive fishing trip. hell, some of us will probably join you if you wish, then you'll learn first hand where some of theose spots are.

you can purchase a licence to fish as a non resident. the price is just a little higher for you than it is for residents. you can either purchase a Conservation licence, or a Sport licence. the conservation is cheaper because the catch limits are lower than the sport licence. PM Dark Edge for the exact prices, as he's from down south and he had to purchase a licence as a non resident. you can also purchase a licence for a day at a time and I believe they are around 10 bucks a day.

if you look at the top of the forum, there's a sticky for the MNR. if you look at the zones, we are in zone 16. there will be a list of fish species on there, as far as major game species in the area. I would imagine the same species that you catch there, are here too. depending on the body of water, some are more predominant than others, but there lots of Bass everywhere here and the Niagara River should be paid a visit for large SM/LM Bass. Lake Erie is also very good for SM Bass. for Muskie, you can't beat the upper Niagara River. although there are lots on the lower Niagara too.

if you want to stay in the Niagara Falls area, there are a few camp grounds that come to mind. there's King Waldorf's camp ground, which is part of Marineland. there's also Jellystone and several KOA campgrounds in the area. if you stay at King Waldorfs, you can fish right from the campground in the Chippawa creek. any species that is in the Niagara River can pretty much be found in Chippawa creek. you could also fish Black Creek which is fairly close by and full of Bass. you should also give Lake Gibson/Moodie a try too. there's some good fishing to be had in those lakes. if you want to give Trout and Salmon a try, you can't beat the whirlpool in the Niagara River. it's just a hell of hike in and out. LOL.

hope that helps you out a bit.

You know any sauger spots on the illinois? If you get in touch with me a week or so before you get here I'll make sure you find some fish :clapping: Trophy bass and lots of walleye and steelhead possibly a 40 # muskie all biting around that time.

Wow thanks for the information guys!
I'll definately reference back to these forums once I get to Niagara, you have been very helpful and I would like to tag along with you and get on some fish!
As for Sauger, I've never fished for them before but I know I have seen reports and definately have some friends I can ask, no problem!
Thanks again

If you cross at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo/Fort Erie you will be 5 minutes from your first tackle shop where you can buy your licence with all the info you need from Denis (check the tackle forum at the top of the fishing forum).

When you say camping do you mean at a camp/trailer park or in some bush somewhere?
If you say shut up and fish then shut the hell up when they tell you that you can't fish anymore!

To be honest im not really sure. Im up for any and all suggestions! I just prefer to be able to park next to my campsite as opposed to hike to it.

I think King Waldorf's camp site will be your best bet, if you want to camp as in tenting it. you can walk from your tent site, down to the water and fish Chippawa creek right at the camp site. it's also within driving distance of some of the best fishing in the country. the Niagara river, Grand river, Welland river, Rec Canal and various lakes and ponds in the region all offer some of the best fishing experiences you can have. there are so many more spots to fish, but too numerous to name here.

myself and others would be more than willing to fish with you if you like. someone might even offer to take you out on their boat and get you into some Salmon and/or Trout. a good many of us have our secret spots that produce decent size fish of all varieties. let us know when you are here and feel free to PM and we can meet up for a day of fishing.

Sounds good. I looked into Waldorf and it looks promising so looks like thats where i'll be headed. Now I just have to sit here in muggy Chicago counting down the days to a scenic drive and some great new fishing experiences :)

if I remember right, Waldorfs is about 30 or 35 bucks a night, with hook ups. so you'll have electricity and stuff, rather than completely roughing it. LOL. I'll ask my wife tomorrow, since she works for Marineland and they own the camp site. :)
