Scottydog.......We use to call burbot ,"ling" or "freshwater cod" and even "eel pout" They are good eating for sure. Don't confuse it with the dogfish.....or bowfin which some say are not edible ....ok, maybe Doc would try one.... That ling is a nice one .The lake of bays is full of them ....fish all night and fill up a pail (not white) :Gonefishing:

Brian, how would the burbot compare to the saltwater cod as far as taste and texture? I sure miss having the occasional cod with chips.

I don't eat fish. I almost lost my supper the other night when I opened up a can of salmon for the wife and found many "disks" (for lack of a better name) on the top of the compressed fish.

My wife has a decent recipe for the sauce, but its damn hard to make a good meat. I was able to make it taste OK, but the texture was all wrong... someone needs to open a greco up here:P

I love a salmon'n'mayo sandwich on toast with lettuce, but my mom always leaves the discs in hers and there's nothing worse than biting down on one of them.....that's like enjoying an egg salad sandwich and crunching into a piece of shell..... :D

As for Donairs, I'm sure there's someone in the Niagara region that serves them. Where....I have no idea, but I know I have seen them.

you can get donairs up here, but they make them different than back east. There was a spot on Hartzle called Capers, but they went out of business a few months after we found them :D

If any one knows anywhere that they make a good Maritime donair let me know.. PS sorry to hijack the thread a bit here.

Still curious as to where you can catch these fish.

DONAIR ????? Never heard of them.....and I've been down east ! So....I googled it up and low and behold, I believe it is what we call a meatloaf . ....found many recipes and some say eat it on pita , on pizza ,or a sub bun . I think Chilli's little peppers would be a good substitute for the cayanne pepper ! :D Any of you east coasters make your own ? How about those fishcakes ......they are great too !

Those ling are tasty but a dogfish is not. I like them in a chowder like Brian mentioned but is really great if you put them in a Paella dish with other shell fish...awesome.

Donairs are good but I have only had them from around here but may be heading down to visit the wife's family in Nova Scotia this fall, may try them when I get there.
