On a side note, I'd like to question the Yellow Perch record as well.
4.3 lbs from Bordentown, NJ on May, 1865 by Dr. C.C. Abbot.
I mean it could be possible, BUT, how good were the scales back in 1865?

Caught on a crayfish by an asian guy.
Went right onto his stringer ....I tryed to tell him that he could have a record fish, unfortunaly the man didnot understand me. Or he just couldnot be bothered.
No word of a lie.

Yeah, but unless you were there authenticating the records, it means squat. They've revoked dubious claims of OLD time records. The 11.5lb Smallie was just reinstated even though there were 4 pictures of it. The record largemouth of 22.5 lbs has no pictures and is under suspicion, but the record remains unchallenged.
My point is, no picture = no proof. And I don't think digital cameras were around in 1865 either, so the "trust" factor and the remote possibility of the fish being weighed in on a certified and calibrated scale with (creditble) witnessess around may have been good enough back then, and is the only proof we may receive.

On one hand, we're told that the big ones carry on the genetics for longevity....on the other hand now we're told that the hatch ratio is low.
I know also if a fish isn't able to spawn due to water conditions or temps that the eggs are never deposited and are absorbed back into the body.
Any fisheries biologist care to share some information on these tid bits?
