Good job on that perch and see what the guy said at the end about telling about secret spots? :worthy:

On a side note, I'd like to question the Yellow Perch record as well.
4.3 lbs from Bordentown, NJ on May, 1865 by Dr. C.C. Abbot.

I mean it could be possible, BUT, how good were the scales back in 1865?

Ive seen a perch that size caught right off lighthouse peir.

Caught on a crayfish by an asian guy.

Went right onto his stringer ....I tryed to tell him that he could have a record fish, unfortunaly the man didnot understand me. Or he just couldnot be bothered.

No word of a lie.

Tommy ,Duh, they could weigh gold dust to the grain back then ,I think I would accept the weight don't you think. especially if it was done on an old european market scale. You know they were accurate cause they didn't give nothing away. :worthy:

Yeah, but unless you were there authenticating the records, it means squat. They've revoked dubious claims of OLD time records. The 11.5lb Smallie was just reinstated even though there were 4 pictures of it. The record largemouth of 22.5 lbs has no pictures and is under suspicion, but the record remains unchallenged.

My point is, no picture = no proof. And I don't think digital cameras were around in 1865 either, so the "trust" factor and the remote possibility of the fish being weighed in on a certified and calibrated scale with (creditble) witnessess around may have been good enough back then, and is the only proof we may receive.

LOL it is pretty funny that all these record fish in Ontario were caught way back. And no records are being beat these days.

Suspicious?

It is a shame that a perch of that size that appears to be full of eggs wasn't released to produce other big fish in the future.

In case of a record, I could see why it was kept.

I was just informed this year that in big old females like walleye , the hatch rate is very poor even though the quantity is large . I would think this may also apply to perch as well , but I'm not sure . And the eating quality of some old fish may not exactly taste like chicken . :Gonefishing:

I heard that last year, too! I don't understand why eggs would be of poor quality in a large fish in general.

On one hand, we're told that the big ones carry on the genetics for longevity....on the other hand now we're told that the hatch ratio is low.

I know also if a fish isn't able to spawn due to water conditions or temps that the eggs are never deposited and are absorbed back into the body.

Any fisheries biologist care to share some information on these tid bits?
