Met a couple of nice lads from the S S Marie today with fish in a bag. A beauty brown and about a 5 pound pike. They offered me the pike. I asked why they didn't want it and they explained they fouled up the release and it hit the rocks pretty hard. Happens to the best of us but at least they kept it until they found a good dinner plate for it.

I gladly accepted and did my best trying the boneless fillet technique. But like the big female perch the pike are full of eggs and the fillets are thin right now. It just seems like such a waste to throw them out. I feel that if we are going to harvest we should learn to maximize use of these fish. Guts head and bones are feeding the coons as we speak but what can I do with the eggs. I'll eat perch eggs but pike is a little different. Normally I'd release this fish but like Tommy sais if your going to fish be prepared to eat what you catch because it doesn't always live. So what do you do with the eggs?

Any ideas? B)

May sound dumb, but I would find a hole where you know pike are and release the eggs into the water. Who knows what will happen?

Better than letting them rot.

Spawning Habits

Pike reproduce (spawn) in the spring. They are random spawners, broadcasting their eggs and milt over vegetation or bottom debris in shallow marsh areas and in flood plains. Unlike some other fish, such as bass or bullheads, pike build no nests and give no parental care to the eggs or young. The highly adhesive eggs stick to whatever they land on. Eggs hatch after eight to 15 days and the young have to fend for themselves. Within three to four weeks, young pike develop their carnivorous habits and will even begin eating other young pike.

The pike's habit of spawning on flood plains can, at times, become a serious problem for its survival. Even slight decreases in the water level can result in the stranding and death of young. In certain areas, this factor limits the abundance of the species.

Thanks for the info fishstick, it's pretty bad when the young even have to hide from their own parents to avoid becoming dinner when they are young. B)

I have actually tried battered pike eggs. I like the small perch ones, but i find the pike ones abit to strong for the liking. You may like the strong taste.

On pike eggs I've taken the whole sac rolled them in flour and fried them in oil. Watch as they sometimes explode. Don,t taste too bad.
