  1. Due to the heavy rains and warmer temperatures the shore ice has become unsafe, because of this ice fishing is closed till further notice. Hopefully early next week we will be able to reopen. Paul Karbusicky Valens Lake CA Superintendent
  2. Happy New Year everyone, unfortunately I don't have good news. Incredibly even though we have had extremely cold temperatures the lake ice is still unsafe. There is a layer of snow and water on top this is slowing down ice growth. I'm hoping that it will be safe by this weekend, stay tuned for updates. Paul Karbusicky Valens Lake CA Superintendent

  4. As of today there is nearly 3" of ice on the lake, if the weather cooperates Valens Lake should be open in a week or so! We require 6" of clear ice before we can open for ice fishing. Check here for updates or visit our website www.conservationhamilton.ca Day entry fee is $10.00, if there aren't staff at the gate please use the automated gate system, it accepts bills, coins and credit cards. We do not have bait or and fishing supplies. Valens Lake is hosting its annual ice fishing derby on February 17, sunrise till 2:00PM. $25 per person children 12 and under are $15, top prizes for the largest pan fish caught (bluegill, crappie and perch are the only fish accepted), senior and junior division. Lots of great prizes and many door prizes, so even if you don't catch a fish you have a chance to win something.   7. Hi, well good news! Valens Lake Conservation Area is once again open for ice fishing, the cold temperatures over the weekend have tightened up the ice, we are presently at 7" or 18cm of ice. There is a light covering of snow, be sure to wear ice cleats, its slippery out there. Also February 11 is our annual ice fishing derby come out and try your luck, many great prizes, even if you don't catch a fish we have a lot of door prizes available to be won.   8. Hi everyone, due to the warmer weather and rain the ice conditions at Valens Lake Conservation Area have become unsafe, hopefully we don't loose all the ice over the next week. I'll keep you posted as to when the ice conditions improve. Don't forget ice conditions can change rapidly through the day when the temperatures are above freezing.   9. There is currently 10" of ice out there, solid shore to shore and smooth, no snow cover. These conditions may change this week as conditions warm up, I will post when anything changes.     Valens Lake ice update

    The ice is holding, we still have 9" of ice, it is smooth as glass now so make sure to bring ice cleats so you don't have a bad fall out there.   11. Unfortunately due to the weather, this years ice fishing derby at Valens Lake Conservation Area is CANCELLED. I was hoping the ice would survive through this warm spell but it never got thick enough and with the milder temperatures through this week it won't have a chance to recover.   13. As of January 27th the ice on Valens Lake is at 8" thick with a dusting of snow. The conditions should remain good through till Sunday. I will post again if the conditions change.   14. Just got off the ice and there is seven inches of solid black ice across the lake. Very light cover of snow and its really slippery out there so please wear your ice cleats, don't need any broken bones. Also mark down February 13 for our annual ice fishing derby.   15. Valens Lake Ice Fishing Derby will be held on February 14, on Valentines day. The gates open at sunrise and vehicle entry is $10.00 per car. You may either park at the workshop or the beach parking lot. Derby registration will be at the gatehouse. Prizes will be given out at the workshop at the end of the derby, there will also be door prizes so even if you didn't catch a fish you may still win something. Because this is being held on Valentines Day this year we will be selling tickets on the ice for a special prize to bring home to your wife, girlfriend, mother or who ever. The special Valentines Day prize is a pair of tickets to any event at First Ontario Center (formerly known as Copps Colosseum) to a maximum value of $150.00, so don't run out and buy some cheap tickets with this, hold onto to them for a good event. Along with this will be a gift card for a dinner for two to a nice restaurant and a bouquet of roses. That should make someone very happy when you bring that home! Also we have a large assortment of prizes; tackle, heaters, a flasher, sleds etc. If you have any questions call the park at 905-525-2183. See you on the ice! Ice Fishing Derby Rules and Regulations Saturday February 14, 2015 The HCA reserves the right to change the following rules at any time up to the day before the derby. If the rules are changed, the revised rules will be posted at the park on the day of the event. Catch and release derby open to anyone. There is no minimum age for participants, however, all children must be with a parent or legal guardian at all times during the derby. Adult participants derby fee is $25 per person. Child derby fee is $15 per person for those 12 and under. For registration please visit or call the park at 905-525-2183 or 519-621-6029. Catches will be accepted at the live release ice hut from 8 a.m. until the closing of the derby, 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded after catches are closed, approximately 2:30 p.m. Fish species credited in the derby are bluegill, crappie, pumpkin seed, brown bullhead, and perch. No other species accepted for the derby. Tickets are based on live release of the fish. One ticket per two fish. A maximum number of 25 tickets will be allowed per angler. A 5-gallon pail or similar container to transport for live release is mandatory. Participants with a winning ticket must be present to claim prize or prizes. If conditions occur which are found dangerous to derby participants, the HCA staff have the right to deem the derby closed and prizes will be given out by random draw. All participants must do their utmost to exhibit good sportsmanship. All participants must follow the Provincial Fishing Regulations set out by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests. It is the participant’s responsibility to identify fish species correctly. All HCA staff, sponsors and event volunteers are not liable for any expenses, claims or demands that may arise from all participating in the derby. By entering the derby all participants declare an understanding of all derby rules and agree to abide by them. In addition, it is understood that images of the derby and/or participants may be used by the HCA for future marketing purposes. All rules are subject to the interpretation of the HCA staff and are final.
