More flies

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been playing with some new materials and techniques. So far I've come up with some stuff that I hope will do well when wet.

I found this lacey craft ribbon in the dollar store. It is stiff but very thin and waterproof. Has a nice sparkle to it!

Royal Coachman. I don't have any tied at the moment, but there are many many examples of them on the 'net. Like these:

I think it is the most attractive of all trout patterns.

Erik, tell me how many you need and how small. I'll be happy to tie up a few for you. Of course we'd have to make arrangements for you to get them, but I'm sure that can be arranged.

<EDIT>

Ok, you mentioned 5mm. Thats about a #20. It won't be fully dressed but I can manage that.

That's what I call "quality" down time .......excellent work Coachman ! :worthy: Some of the colours are outstanding . It looks like you found a gold finch for a couple of flies . What is that large feather on fly #6 , it looks like a grouse feather , and that blue feather is awesome ....did you happen to find a peacock somewhere ? :lol: Do you use dye to add colours to any of your flies ?

Flies 6&7 are wicked coachman.........you know, I have a friend who is a well acomplished fly fisher....and he ties flys that can be worth up to $2000!!

The ones you put in a glass box and "admire"!! Maybe this is your calling?lol

Anyway's those flies are awsome!! Good job!

Also....anyone hear from Alex? AKA Darth wader? Have not heard from him in a while??? Just wondering if he is ok?

The gold feathers are crest feathers from a golden pheasant. The large feather on #6 is a body feather from a ring-neck pheasant. The blue feathers are dyed guinea hen (they're usually black with white spots). I have dyed feathers using clothing dye and even Kool-aid.

Thanks for the comments, all! Much appreciated!

I was chatting with Alex on FB the other night. He seems to be doing ok and is pumped for his trip East next month.

Well . I was close.....gold finch/pheasant ! I mounted a golden pheasant yrs.ago & also a few ring necks ( sorry ,no left over feathers , needed them all ! :) I shop at the buck store (now the buck25 store) for a lots of things . Much of the stuff is the same as wally m. & 80% cheaper . They have tons of feathers (that's a lot of feathers) :unsure: ,& every colour imaginable ....should save you some dye . :P It's great that you have such a huge source of material for fly tying right at your doorstep .I have a bag of blue jay feathers in my van just waiting to be tied ......but they don't have a lot of blue in them ......
