Today's Shed Hunt

Recommended Posts

Worked hard but only found two. One deer shed his whole head and the other looks like a non-typical. There are two stickers near my hand and one is bent like a hook.

Hard to believe how much snow is still out there on the North side of the tree lines.

I've been out two times and found only one that was from last year all chewed up. I can't believe that the amount of walking I did and the amount of deer sign and no sheds.I'm getting to think that the bucks are down in numbers.......

Fishcatch,

I'd say you're experiencing a high success rate so far. Sheds are notoriously hard to find. Those folks who find numerous sheds year after year do so because they have discovered the high-percentage wintering areas and they return to look for sheds in those hot-spots. Its much harder for us to find sheds while we're still roaming around general deer country.

I put hours on the other day walking deer trails down my way (got eatten alive by hawthornes!!). Saw 3 deer, moved at least 5, and saw 3 turkey, but no shed found. Was in the right area, deer poop covering EVERYWHERE but no sheds to show for it. I know there is only 2 or 3 bucks in this area that I have seen, one was a dandy! Last day I saw him was Dec 3rd, don't know if he dropped em somewhere else or what. I did find one this year in another area thats a beauty though! I'll try to get some pic's up soon!

Well I went out with friend Willy today. 10 minutes in we found this one.

Same as you NSH but we got one. I do find them everywhere I look but I have a system. I don't do woods and if in thickets I head straight for the clearings. If I were a deer and this thing felt like a loose tooth does to a kid I'd want to rub the sore part of my head on the ground. I don't think they feel the anler, just where it attaches to their head so they'll want to do it in a clearing where small buckthorns aren't going to poke them in the eyes.

Follow the deer trails through the thorns but pay special attention to the pockets and openings. I look for the colour of dead branches. It's that driftwood look that lets me spot them so easilly. I have a girlfriend who's frustrated with my success because she spends a great deal of time looking in the woods only to find tiny spikes. I told her to get out of the woods. We're no longer friends. I think my hunting pictures bothered her because she's an anti-hunting vegetable eater but she knows little about animals.

Also found some eggs which might be wild turkey. Tip for antler hunting. If it looks like a likely place for pheasants to lay eggs your probably in the right spot.

Another tip for antler hunting. Go where the deer were in January. If it's a north side of a treeline there was likely deeper snow which they avoid. Avoid areas where water pools then refreezes as these are loud and hard to travel paths in January. Choose slightly elevated paths on fairly flat stretches. The deer are all over now so fresh poo won't necessarily put you on sheds. Start in the no fire zones. There's allot more deer and I believe a higher percentage of bucks. :th_fudd:

Good job Dan! Like I mentioned earlier, I've only seen 2 bucks down here, there have a hundred or so acres to lose em in, if they drop em on the right side of the road. I was just walking trails because it was a crap shoot anyway. Checked clearings and only found turkey's!! :P I'll have to take pic's of my 1 find this year tomorrow, gonna make ya drool!!
