gunner-2
my buddy took these pics in simcoe during the spring turkey hunt and no it's not bigfoot LOL an
mooseslayer
I would say Black bear. I have been bear hunting for many years and many trees around our baits will get beat up the same way. They will often mark trees for territorial sign posts. The scat is probably not bear and incidental.
gunner-2
NO it's not black bear there is no bear in simcoe just for you guys that don't know simcoe is not up north it's about 1 hour from dunnville we are not sure and may sound funny cause there not around hear neither or not supposed to be
mooseslayer
I have been to Simcoe many times. There was a black bear shot in Burlington so they can come that far south. It is much more likely than the other option which is a cougar.
bassmaster24
That's a bear I've seen those markings many times. There could very well be bear in simcoe as there was one in Hamilton there not long ago.
mooseslayer
oops...sorry...thought you meant Lake Simcoe. Still possible but probably not a bear.

bucketmouthjohnny
that poop most definitely looks like a cougar's from pictures I have seen .... can't be a bear, the scrapes are too low...look like 3 feet off ground max .... send the pics to the mnr with the location...I am sure they would investigate... I'd like to know...
Snags
I agree with johny. Send em to the mnr with as much detail as possible on location. Scat could be coyote. the tree damage was done by a cat. Very similar to how a housecat would scratch something.

Scat could be coyote. the tree damage was done by a cat. Very similar to how a housecat would scratch something. That does sound like the best thing the scat was found about 50 yrd away from the tree but it could be coyote could it be antlers marks
Jer
Says this was made by a deer (buck) scraping its antlers
mooseslayer
I wouldn'tbe afraid to go hunting. I hunt bear, moose...just about anything with my bow. I would set up a game camera...or several and probably bait as well to see if I can get videos.
gunner-2
he is going to put a cam out just afraid to get it stolen Says this was made by a deer (buck) scraping its antlers that's not it for sure

dave524
How high are the scratches above ground? A buck's will be low with his head down a bit while a cat or bear will be standing on hind feet and the scratching will be fairly high up. If most of the scratching is below 3 feet off the ground I would say a buck, a large cat would reach up to 6 feet or more. photo by Jer is defintely a buck, quite low to ground. davincan
Occam's Razor. Surely a buck made these markings and the scat is that of a coyote.
