Walleyeguy
I forgot to ask before if anyone knows roughly how deep the Whirlpool is and does it drop off quickly from the shore or does it gradually get deeper. It was still a bit murky when I was there so I couldn't see far. Thanks
Guest LloydChristmas
i read somewhere it's 100 feet in the middle if you're fishing about 10 yards out, you can run your float about 12-15 feet deep but you need to know the area as there are a lot of snags... I usually bottom bounce and i think it's about 30-40 feet deep where I cast.
Guest Splakin
I was fishing in the spring when the jet boat came up the river. The guy on the speaker mic was going off in a bunch of stats and history about the river. I heard him say that the whirlpool is 185' deep. RAUMASTER
I believe the sign at the Whirlpool cable car claims 140'
Guest Steelheader
Splakin' is right - 185' is what they told me when I took the jetboat tour. They said that falling out of the boat in the middle of the WP would be certain death - even with a PFD you'd get sucked under and it might be weeks before you pop back up again. Devil's hole is apparently 150' deep, about as deep as the gorge walls are high.
Guest LineLess
Makes sence, since the falls were ones there, and usually the bottom is as deep as the water falls are high, Thats what i heard.

Guest fishstick
Can't someone just mark a basketball and toss it in? Wherever it comes up might give you some sort of indication as to where it travels......no? What happens to fish when they go near it? Do they get sucked down and reappear weeks later, or do they just pop up 100 yards downstream? I think this would be an interesting school project, minus the human guinea pigs. Guest Pinner
There was a documentury on discovery channel some time ago, about the niagara. The only way they could estimate the depth of the whirlpool, because the layers of currents and such that sonar and laser would bit work, they used glass rods that change colour under pressure. From there estimate deepest goes between 160-180 ft, pretty impressive. But what I found more interesting is that the composition of the stone is much softer from the rest of the river and they gather it took from 24-48 "HOURS" for the water to carve out the whirlpool. Guest FisherNick
I too was on the jet boat ride, they said about 150' in the middle. Its kinda scary to think that if some one fell in they'd almost certainly die... But I didnt realize the devils hole was that deep, wow I thought for the most part the rest of the river was in the 30' range.
Sirfishalot
The Niagara is an amazing river. My grandfather was Wiliam "Red" Hill, probably the most famous riverman alive, with more rescues credited to him than any man ever to live, anywhere. Back in the days when the river was at almost full flow capacity they would think nothing of tieing a rope around themselves and swimming into the whirlpool to recover a barrel or a body or anything for that matter.Sounds crazy ,but back then what else were you able to do, call for a helicopter?. Growing up I learned alot about the river and how to respect it, as all people that venture to it's shores should. I have lost 2 friends over the years who did not respect its power. The estimate of '185 or so is probably the closest but again it is a soft spot there and will continue to gouge out, albiet not very fast but still get deeper and gety deposited downstream, hence leaving us with the bar, one of the best fishing spots in the world. good luck, stay safe, respect the river. Guest bigfish1965
Actually the Whirlpool is the remnant of an ancient fork in the Niagara River. Prior tot he last glacieal age, the Niagara split at the whirlpool with another section running down through St Davids. Remnants of the old river bed can still be found. See...I was paying attention in high school.

Guest ZippO
If it gets that deep just try to imagine if an astroid or meteorite (a huge one) were to fly right in the pool ! LOL Dont even bother lookin up the gorge for the run up, light up a smoke and enjoy the view... LOL ZippO
Guest canadadude
Interesting enough what we fish in at the glen is acctually the last time the river had 2 falls like we see today however the horse shoe falls was on the American side eroded back cutting off the water. The rocks and tumbled mess we walk through was accutally an island years ago! The Canadian falls today will eventually erode back cutting off the American falls we see today and a similiar glen will be over there! Next time you walk down in the glen if you look close and imagine you can see how the river has evolved over these many years! The Niagra river is a great learning tool in geography not only one of the greatest fishing areas in the world
