  1. I miss port hope salmon fishing season after i moved to NIagara falls in 2018. The run there started in Aug this year as I heard through the grape vine, the salmon run over there is the biggest in Southern ontario, coarse fishing even works so effectively fishing there. I had great memorise of the good 20 years I had fish that area during the season. I normally travel from Toronto to Port hope twice a week, from second week of Aug to oct first week. To get the prime pier spot , one needs to be there by 3Pm, just to hold a spot, fish do not necessarily bite till an hour after dark around 7pm. Lots of Torontonians go there to fish, yet no one cares about car pooling. I met americans, people from ottawa , quebec, kitchener etc , who go there hoping to catch a female for its egg. Every year, someone will be asking us at the pier, if we accidentally snag a rod and reel while casting spoon, cause a salmon took his equipment while he was not payng attention. The garbage thrown around during the season is pathetic, including anglers cutting a female salmon for its eggs and then just threw the cut up female body on the ground , hoping someone else might want the discarded meat. The area gets close to 100 people at some nights, some do not have license fishing the salmon season, and have to run away fast when they saw conservation officer or a police checking for fishing license, Police there has the authority to issue tickets after years of complaint from locals. The Pandemic was just an excuse to close off that area due to locals complainging in years. The salmon will be very happy this year to enjoy playing by themselves. I brought many first time friends who seldom fish, but wanted to experience fighting a salmon. I remembered having to save 3 rods on 3 different occasion , when a salmon took it off the ledge while the anglers coarse fishing but left for split second and not paid attention. It was that exciting fishing over there.
  2. Sorry for the title minor confusion, the existing parking lot at port D with fishable area might probably be close off soon, the pier is still under construction and is close off. But will eventually be reopen.
  3. A friend got fined for $30 not buying a ticket.
  4. On wednesday, I saw a partial gate still open before the parking lot, it was close off months ago during covid restricted time, The path towards the dam has a NEW close off gate for the last few days.
  5. Does anyone know what is the rough distance, of the river (in KM) from Queenston boat launch to Mouth of lower Niagara falls? Or anyone knows how far of a boat ride from the boat launch to the mouth? IF someone wanted to fish the mouth of lower river, has any Canadian driven across the border and launch from the NY young's point instead? One thing to consider is the $10 toll charge (car + a trailer/boat) driving back to canadian border.
  6. $290 for you since you go to church as I do. Take me fishing on your boat if you have a spare spot, I know some honey hole on Upper niagara river USA side. Fishing there is good when water is from 50-60 degrees. I sold my boat after my separation 1.5 years ago and move to Niagara falls almost  a year now. joshua 4168210966.

I just saw your response today. Not sure why I did not get a notification.

  7. On May 6, 2019, gas rate at Niagara falls is CA$1.23. Buffalo was at US$2,70- 2. 89/gallon My Grand caravan takes 70 liters. A saving of CA$12.00 per fill up based on US$1=CA$1.35 exchange rate. Minus the Toll charge now is CA$5 to get back to Canada. Since I have to do some errands across, Someone at craigslist buffalo was nice enough to give me a 9.5ft pinnacle rod for Free. It was originally a 10ft rod and the first 6 inch to the tip was gone. I just fixed the tip after I got home. Rod was rated 4-12 lb steelhead rod. I save a few bucks. Overall. I visited the NYPA area and schloopkls plant as well, both areas were closed due to high water level. Two maid of the mist boat was parked on the Schloopkls platform, the ramp attached to the boat and part of the cemented shoreline were submerged, no customer will be able to enter the boat without getting their feet wet. so no business for them as well.

I thought the smelt migration were temp sensitive , I read water temp should be from 38-40 degrees. Water was still 36 degrees yesterday. Could happen anytime soon.
  10. Due to water rising and falling unpredictably these days at Niagara river, I would assume fishing is tougher now than it was when water remains at a low level a few years ago, one other reason we have less report . It is nice to know tyler taking over. Tyler should voice up if he needs some extra funding, Put those who gave some funds into a separate category.
  11. I lost my fishing net a month ago either at port d or at whirlpool, or the glen. Nothing to lose but to try here in case someone picked it up. Joshua.
  12. If he is homeless, he might be well off inside prison with a warm bed to sleep on and decent 3 meal food. NO hard work to go out to the lake to catch fish to eat. It is obvious, he does not care about his numerous record. Being banned from fishing will not stop him from doing the same crime in the future. I heard it cost tax payer $45, 000/yr to support and feed an inmate. Locking him up means, we all have to pay for it.
  13. Based on the image from Kuwait, Just like our Nafta deal, if the small percentage of body parts were just made elsewhere, it is still considered from local source, I never touch our olive oil either, Been mislabeled in years Hard to find pure Olive oil anymore these days. Hey guys, If you notice my personal profile...............I moved to Niagara Falls. so now I am a local boy now.

For lures- Spoon and jigheads of different weight and grubs of different size and colors are my best lures. some crankbait are also useful , some floats and some that dives.
  15. If you are doing it at home, and you are in charge of your wifi connection, it is safe. just never open any bank related stuff on public wifi site such as mcdo, or the airport area. I buy on line goods for 15 years, almost as a lifestyle now. But I will never store the card number permanently at any on line retail site for shopping convenience purposes. Now go buy more fishing toys with your new credit card!
  16. Goop or shoe goo, should work as well, try Michael craft store, google for their 40% off coupon code. very strong semi flexible yet hard clear glue., The price will come out to $4 a tube after discount. If the aluminum flexes between the rivet and the body frame area, the JB weld might break apart.
  17. for those who live close to the border, will the custom officer hassle anyone who just go across for few hours to get gas and food supplies on weekly basis? Gas and some basic food such as milk and eggs, cheese, etc...and other food and consumer goods stuff are way cheaper across the border.
  18. I am located at North York Toronto area. I sometimes fish there, but cost me at least $35 gas these days to go there.

What is your body size? height? weight?

  19. I might have posted this before, But old funny fishing stories never dies. Dumb and Dumber! I have never bothered seeing the great Niagara Water falls during the first 8 years I became a landed immigrant. I just focused on establishing my life and career in Toronto area.(the city was not yet called Greater Toronto Area), Until I heard of whirlpool fishing, where someone could catch a big trout called steelhead. My first naive impression of trout was the fish was just a small one lber that people caught while fly fishing. Internet was very primitive back in the early 90's, still no GPS technology available. I only read from the first Original fishing forum founded by UofT Zoology student, about fishing Niagara region. the forum was just a one liner chat primitive fishing board that works on AOL, it is a privilege to those who have a dial up account, they could access the fishing forum. Some anglers tip/mentioned about big trout being caught at Niagara region, and warned that it was challenging area to get to. Kawarthas lake used to be flooded with fish, so I never bothered venturing out farther than an hour drive, still not much traffic back those days. Getting to places was by Mapping. Mapping was using a magnifying glass to read from a paper map, then we need to jot down all the street to know when and where to turn. So I told one of my friend that we should stay overnight at the Brand new Redroof Inn (it cost $35/night back then and was promoted at Toronto Star paper) to visit Niagara falls with our family on Victoria Day, then fish whirlpool when our family was still asleep early next morning. Then, after we had fished, we can take them to the famous Flying Saucer restaurant and have our cheap 99 cents breakfast meal (also advertised from Toronto Star) What could you get for 99 cents back then? Two toasted bread and two eggs cooked at our preference, and decent amount of home fries. unlimited Coffee refill was $1 extra. Who said only cheap people go there.,we always give a 50% tip! My friend and I woke up by 7am, then drove to the whirlpool parking lot. As the leader, I excitedly head straight across the parking lot, with my friend cautiously tagged along not too far behind. After standing at the edge and speculated the hill's steepness . I told my friend "This is doable, we just have to slide down with our butt when it gets really steep." He replied, "Are you sure?" I then insistently replied "How else could anyone get down there?". So with one hand holding our small tackle box and our 6'rod, while another hand , we tried to grab whatever small tree or branches we can get a hold of, we nervously went down, mostly slid down with our butt off the dried leaves. After 15 minutes, we finally got to the helicopter platform. I told my friend that we got lucky that day , since it was not a rainy day , where the leaves were dry and were there to cushion our butt. My butt was somewhat sore, but our pants were not dirty and we got there safely, was my big sigh of relief! We only saw 3 other guys and one kid fishing that morning by 8am , i asumed the limited amount of people was all due to the steep hill to get down, and Kids were natural in sliding down on anything Everyone was catching fish, including the kid, who had used a worm as bait on white cheap/red round bobber float. I never forgotten many big fish swam just beside the clear water shoreline in front of us. I cast with a mini size one spinner, after few cast, ....Fish ON! I landed the steelhead very fast since I was using a mitchel combo graphite rod and reel combo bought from CA tire, it was made in USA, with original 15lb mono line,(no braided line then) and zero drag, the line I never bothered to replaced in years, the line seemed strong, could last forever and had landed lots of fish. I did not even know the importance of the reel drag system. Tight drag for me meant the line would be strong to ensure fish could not go too far from where I caught it. After I landed the fish, and took some pictures before I released it. I told myself this Niagara place is a gem. Then I told my friend that his lure was not effective so I gave him another mini spinner. After few cast, he also landed as well, with his 20lb mono, and no drag fishing equipment. With contented feeling, we were forced to quit by 9am, we never seriously imagined we would actually caught a fish that morning, especially, we promised our wives to be back at the motel by 9am. When I was about to finished packing up , I noticed my pliers went missing, so I confronted the guy if he had seen it, and just felt someone had stole it. I did not know that time, the water rises due to city released more water during daytime. So my pliers got buried from the rising water after all . I then asked one of the angler if there were other faster trail for us to get back up..........He replied, "There is only one trail , and the stairway is also there." I felt so stupid grinning at my friend, and said .........." At least we both caught fish!" We went back to our family and took them to the Flying saucer restaurant. They originally did not believe we had caught fish , then I told them, we will have proof after the film (non digital camera) gets developed. I then told my friend that we should do this more often. He did not respond that moment, .............All I remembered that was the first and the last time we fished together! Since that first great adventurous experience fishing Niagara , I never stopped going to Niagara often, even if it felt a tedious chores having to face traffic congestion coming from Toronto area. When someone or a foreign guest asked me what else to do at Niagara Falls, I always insisted of Fishing and Hiking! ................but I ensure i excluded Butt sliding activity!
  20. I can't wait till the cheaper version comes out, and I want one too! A $5000 fish where Japanese are willing to pay for fresh Sashimi, ...............Could be worth that using that gadget Without a drone , it is hard to spot the fish from shore.
  21. I started with almost similar reel I paid $65CA , and another $25 Ukrainian reel 8 years back. For niagara river and similar to Mississuaga river flow current speed application, these type of reel is more than enough to use, where line does come out even at 4g float. When I was still new at using the Ukrainian made Centerpin reel , to prevent a birdnest while casting. I had to improvised ,cut and add a slim leather piece material that came off an old wallet, add it to the screw knob, just to add slight drag during casting . Then I could release or tighten to add drag as I please. The draw back was the center screw knob can potentially come loose, as fishing time passes . Some minor aggravation, but it helped control the over spinning. Finding where the fish are hiding, and less crowded spot is the toughest part in a fishing success these days. Back more than 15 years ago, when Centerpin reel was costing $300 to $500. Many of us were using spinning and baitcasting reel to float fish or bottom bounce. There were also way more fish and less anglers before then these days. The next gadget to advance fishing gear for the Elite ...........will be Drone fishing!
  22. I am not sure of the effect of leaving a clean garbage bag that is visible and hanging on a tree beside the walkway to a fishing ground. Would that gesture encourage anglers to dump their garbage inside ? Or the area will become an ugly garbage dumping ground? During past salmon season, I notice quite a few beer can, worm container, etc. on the ground beside 3 guys who were just ready to pack up and leave, so I remind them to keep our environment clean. What they did was they put their garbage inside a garbage bag, but they left the bag behind , tide to a fence, for others to use. I was not sure if that was a good or bad idea after all. In our condo building where I live, people are allowed to smoke outside the entrance, but they took off the cigarette ashtray stand, since some smokers carelessly miss putting their cigarette butt inside. Or tenant does not put their garbage inside the garbage can, just threw outside of it. So a sign was placed beside the garbage bin to remind others that garbage should be placed inside the Bin. Another observation of mine, condo tenant who parked inside the underground parking lot do not necessarily pick up their own litter either. We do not have extra personnel to sweep our parking lot , so the accidental litter end up staying there for weeks. Since it bugs me at times, I end up picking them up.
  23. Smerch, What is happening with your fishing report? Instead of posting a photos of your catch, you have been posting high quality garbage photos instead. Are you discouraging and telling us that there are more garbage to catch then fish these days? Have you switch hobby to becoming an environmentalist instead of an Angler? ...............Or Are you getting into a different kind of Urban Art form that we have to learn to appreciate these days!
  24. I heard that GTA recycling program is not a profitable program either , it still needs government subsidy, and could not break even. Many recyclable things still went inside our garbage bag, where no agencies to monitor its inefficiencies. My Romanian friends told me their government hires people, who will dig out the garbage of residence and fines the household owners , if there are recyclable stuff inside that should have been included at the recyclable bin. I can't blame the community to stereotype shore fisherman for being garbage dumper, due to the obvious concentrated garbage being left behind on fish-able shoreline. Many people seems to not care about the cleanliness/aesthetic beauty of our environment. Though it is unfair to stereotype people, where there are many other shore anglers who cares and have to clean up after those who dump garbage. Once we get used to seeing or hearing of too many similar negative things, we get desensitized and somewhat became carefree ourselves. So many homicidal crimes happening in GTA everyday that we are not too concern or baffled anymore. Once in a blue moon, I fish lake Ontario on a boat, I witness lots of plastic made material floating around at least a km away from our shoreline. Our shoreline is not as bad , since the city cleans them often. but many plastic still floats too far from shoreline that no government agencies have the man power or financial budget resources to clean them up. Water bottle is one obvious item seems visible everywhere. If most people kept on drinking bottled water, then there are no incentives for the government to provide consistent clean drinkable tap water in the future. Southern Ontario creates so much garbage, and so unfortunate where state of Michigan is desperate for money and willing to take our garbage as a solution! In Japan, having more limited space, they were able to minimize their garbage output, and have incinerator that coverts garbage into reusable energy and with minimal pollution output. Would it give Consumers more incentive to improve our recycling habits, if there are higher values that we need to pay first, but we can also redeemed money from these recyclable goods? Only LCbo has a limited Bottle recycling program. IN USA, Many groceries have smart machines that accept different recyclable stuff, and consumers gets a refund for them. Grocery shopper used to dump the push cart everywhere outside the premises or even take them for a km stroll . Until it cost to borrow one of these cart, from a quarter to a loonie , and get their money back if they return them to their designated spot. So Consumers are trainable after all. How about some kind of recyclable center that will give us a raffle numbered ticket, to those who can dump minimum of a lb of recyclable material. Then once a month, there is a website that will inform the winner, prize from a cup of coffee to a trip to the Bahamas. The draw back will be some people will be stealing recyclable stuff . It happened within GTA before , when some independent recycling company stealing recyclable stuff off the blue bin owned by the city.
