Try the Welland River on Merrit Island. There are a couple of relaxing spots to fish there and plenty of fish will take a simple worm and hook presentation; and if the kiddies get bored there is a playground within site of the fishing spots so you can let them run while you continue to relax and fish!

Occam's Razor. Surely a buck made these markings and the scat is that of a coyote.

At long last I finally caught a Bowfin! This beauty took cut bait on the Welland River last Wednesday evening while fishing for Channel Cats. We were very surprised to see what it was as it came to shore. Put up a great fight too!
Now to continue the pursuit of the elusive Gar Pike...

Damn, Joey! Did you weight that thing?? I just looked up the Ontario Record and it is 20.6lbs at 31" in length. You can't we too far away from that!?

Took my buddy and his boys to my favorite spot yesterday and had a strange day. All we landed were a few drums on dew worms. Odd thing was that we had 9 fish run with our cut bait but every single one of them spat out the hook! All the kids got were a few good battles with what had to be some very sizable Channel Cats...better than nothing but we'll be heading back soon for a little payback! I need to land at least one monster cat before I turn my wife into a salmon/trout widow for the next few weeks!

Been having a ball fishing the Welland river with my boys a couple of times over the last few days. Lots of small channel cats, perch, silver bass, bullheads and a couple of nice surprises. Here is one of them:

Don't fret about how my boy is holding him...it came home with us for dinner! It was a small miracle that we caught this guy and more of a blessing that we got him in. You see, we were fishing with cut bait (targeting Channel cats) and this guy took the cut bait off the bottom and swallowed it. How the heck his teeth didn't cut the line is beyond me! Was also cool to watch a snapping turtle try to steal him off our stringer!
Then there was this guy...much smaller than the one that got away! (we lost a friggin monster!)

Loving the Welland! Lots of new entries for my Fishing Diary.

Just happy that I am finally making my 100th post! (Only took me about a year and a half!)
Okay, maybe I do have something to say...this is an excellent, well run Forum brimming with great stuff and helpful mods & members. Thanks for all the reports, tips & info! I'll try not to open another self-aggrandizing, useless topic until I hit #1000!

Had a nice afternoon fishing with my boys. Got a couple of nice smallmouth, a nice largemouth, and a few nice rock bass including the largest rock bass I have ever seen or caught! (3rd from the right in the photo below)
Kept a few for a Fish Fry...Rock Bass were the tastiest of the lot!

Cull...and learn to live with coyotes! I know several hunters that will shoot any coyote they see on site. I recently read about a study with findings that coyotes will remove up to 18% of a deer population through predation. Further, they tend to take the deer least desireable to the hunter; which are the young, the weak, the frail (starving), and the sick. Meaning they should probably be viewed as a valuable partner to the hunter on this particular front. Seems silly to kill an animal that can play a big part in controlling deer populations, and in a very natural way.

I took my boys to a local quarry yesterday. I hadn't been there before and when I got there I was struck by what a beautiful oasis this place was. The water was crystal clear and there was plenty of access points around the perimeter. The kids had as great time catching crayfish, swimming, snorkeling, looking at frogs & turtles, 'rescuing' tadpoles from shallow puddles that were sure to dry up in the next few days, etc. All in all a great place to spend a summer afternoon with the kids...with one exception...all the friggin broken beer bottles, empty bottles and cans, and the rest of the trash strewn around the place! We see the same thing year after year from the local conservation areas, to the trails in Algonquin Park, to the small beaches on quiet little lakes north of Sudbury, and on the side of every road and highway between here and there.
I really don't think any amount of fines or enforcement initiatives will put a stop to this. Those of us that do not litter and who take our trash out with us and dispose of it properly are not behving this way because we fear repercussions for our actions...we do this because we care! The root of the problem is that some people just don't care. And those of us that do care will, unfortunately, have to clean up after the buggers that don't unless we want to watch the places we love deteriorate into crap-holes. My wife and I have gotten into the habit of bringing a garbage bag with us virtually every time we venture outdoors. The kids take great pride in filling it up. It's not much, but it helps and I would like to think that it will be better in the future if enough kids are encouraged to do the same. At the end of the day I think all we can do is model good behavior and hope others will be influenced by our actions.

I make my own jerky all of the time...especially when beef goes on sale at Sobey's! Tried quite a few recipes with mixed results. I have found that keeping it fairly simple is the way to go. If you get too many flavours going you loose the natural taste of the beef. Worcestershire is definitely the best liquid base and then add any combo of salt, pepper, garlic powder, chilli pepper (try different variations such as Ancho, Chipotle, Red Dragon, etc), onion powder, cumin, etc. The longer you marinate the better.
A few batches ago I did some plain salt & pepper. If you haven't tried this you won't be disappointed. Just season the beef generously with sea salt and black pepper and throw it in the dehydrator. Voila!...Beef Jerky that tastes like a steak! Yumbo!
You can also cut the beef in different directions to vary the texture. Cut across the grain for a totally different chew than when you cut with the grain. Most people like the texture when cut with the grain; but if you really like to get a bold flavour out of the marinade, a cross-cut meat will absorb and hold a lot more of the flavour. (Think of it like staining wood)
