Port D Carp

Started fishing Port for carp, lost one fish in about an hour on the hair rig.  Baited the area well with maize so will be back today after work.

Every time I reel in my line to rebait, the corn is gone! Is it the current or small fish?  Maybe I should start using dough balls for better efficiency...Some big fish surfacing around just need the right bait.  Also, with the rocks in front of the concrete pad, float fishing should work for them, as well as for trout in the fall.

Try putting maize on your hair instead of corn. I usually don’t fish corn on the hair it falls off or gets eaten by smaller fish. If I do use corn I always have some fake corn on so there’s always something on the hair.

Good chance it's gobies taking your corn .  I pick out my largest pieces of maize for the hair rig and use string or elastic for a stopper . That helps the corn stay on the hair longer ...sometimes I have caught up to 3 carp on the same  hair rig/ corn. Sometimes I use a larger hook with a longer shank to put the maize on the hook . The gobies will pick at it and I may add a couple more pieces every 20 minutes . Small perch and bass will pick at the corn too .

This one paid the ultimate price trying to rob me .......( larger hook) & can corn

I got a 2 lb.bag of frozen maize out of the freezer , just now , and it was boiled up in Aug.2020 . I put it all in double seal zip bags, draw out most of the air with a straw and double bag it . It will thaw out overnight and ready to use in about 8 hours . It's used for chum and for bait . I poke a needle through each piece ,then push the hair through each piece .  If using a loop for the hair ,  you can load up the needle and have new corn on the loop in seconds .

When fishing the 12 yesterday , when I had the double hit and had to let one rod sit as line was peeling out ....the carp got off (luckily) and my line didn't get shredded up from the mussels , and the hair was cut off .....first time that has happened !

When I see the word "maize"  I think of feed corn. Feed corn or cattle corn that is sold to you dry and then you boil it to make it soft and useable. As opposed to frozen or canned corn that you can eat. I could be wrong though for sure. New to the carp game.

Right on the money cleithrum

Fished today in the evening, no hits but made a nice rod holder:)

You might want to add a 10 lb.rock to that rod holder SS .   I can see a frisky carp taking your gear for a nice ride down the channel  lol

You are also fishing at the gobie ranch  , nice fat Lake O . gobies that like corn  !  The 12 Mile has been flowing high and fast , and they have narrowed the channel with those big rocks so the channel runs faster now . I found I need more weight to keep my bait from moving and getting caught on the rocky bottom .

Guys used to fish for carp just in front of that white yacht on the left . That was before they rearranged those docks ...no good there now with the steel pillars .(loaded with zebras)

Weren't you last fishing Rennie Park  SS ?  I'll try the 12 again but  will use one rod there because the bottom has rocks and mussels . (and lots of current)

My reel is set to a loose drag so that the spool spins freely when they take the bait, I guess we have to find a new spot where they hold!

I fished Rennie in the evening last time I went, I find that they shutoff around 2:00 pm and I won't last in the sun more then 2 hours in this heat! Will be good float fishing for salmon and trout in the fall around those rocks!  The fish will be tight to shore away from the main current, plus lots of bait around...

I prefer canned corn as a hair and hook bait because of the high natural sugar content over maize. If I am having issues with gobies or perch I put the corn in spawn netting and fish it on a hair like a boilie. You can put it on the hook but you will have a higher hook ratio on a hair.

I add a can or two of crushed sweetened pineapple to my maize ....or you can add sugar or honey . Carp must have a sweet tooth ( lips)  !

I found it helps to use a longer shank hook to load up more can corn  They pull can corn it off the hair rig to easily so I use maize .

Some hot ugly days ahead so I may hit the 12 early tomorrow.... if I can get my hide out of bed !!  On a cooler day I'll have to take my bass /pike gear and try some old , once reliable spots to toss lures, tubes or swim baits or go to a few channel cat spots and use up some long frozen shrimp !

This guy was right !!   I got to the 12 by 9am (early for me) !  Water was high , fast , clear , and it was sunny and hot already !  After a light chum job I got my first hard hit in 10 minutes ....got off  in a few secs.. Ended up with 2  small carp and lost 2 . It was way to hot to fish ! A guy on a BMW bicycle stopped by and we chatted for a half hour ...turns out "Scott" has a daughter who lives near Trenton , close to my daughter . When I mentioned my daughter's husband's  name he worked with him here in Niagara  and they know each other well . He will drop in to visit his old friend in 2 weeks when he goes to Trenton ....small small world !

 Tomorrow ...32*C......after 4 glasses of juice/water to re-hydrate today , I'll be staying inside my cool 75* C. house with a cool one ....  :th_fudd:......:Gonefishing:

The last carp I caught took the bait when I was chatting with another guy who was jogging  !  I didn't take my alarm as I was using one rod . I had my back to the rod and when I glanced at the rod it was bouncing . By the time I got to the rod the carp came to the surface on the other side ! Luckily it was only about 6-7 lbs & I was able to horse it across the strong current . Lots of jumpers today , all over the area .  I should have fished the other side today ...lots of shade there in the mornings . I have a spot to try on that side next trip , about a 2 minute ride on the bike from the parking lot.

Roofing tomorrow   ?     Insane  !!

!2 Mile Carp

Tried a new spot today ,  beauty spot  , nice backwash with a good current . It looks like a good carp spot  as carp are everywhere in the 12 .

I have caught bass , and channels there many years ago .  I'll try worms , minnows  & shrimp at a later time .

I did the usual routine ( chum with maize , hair rig with a floater ) but to no avail . Another skunkeroo !

Next trip ....deep water , rocky bottom , maize on the hair ... with poutine on the side !

Rocky bottoms are always good to fish. Hopefully the poutine will do the trick next time out

I should give this spot another go , it has shade all morning and there's a weed line about 15' out  ,then drops off quickly . If no bites in a few hours I should take another rod and toss some baits for bass ,etc.  There was some garbage but no too bad there .

Here's a shot of most of the area ....

I tried the deep spot today . The current was stronger than anticipated , moving back and forth every 5 minutes ....had to use 2 oz. and some floating weeds would catch the line periodically . I matched yesterday's catch ....zero for zero !  UGH !!  Rust is claiming me !!

I passed on the poutine  and came home with 2 fat chili dogs with fries . That was both lunch and supper for us !

At least you got out for some fresh air  smerch. Soon enough the carp will be on the feed again.

Well , I hit my good ol' reliable spots at Rennie today !!  I only lasted 3 hours as the heat & humidity was brutal,  and very little  wind.   I tried bread for a change and maize on the hair on the other rod,  but not a scratch !  I got a coffee & fritter and went looking for minnows but they must be with the carp !

The weed beds are thicker and reaching out into the bay more . I think the carp are in those weeds .......   :ninja:
