  1. The guy I'm talking about just said bouncing a white jig, neither him nor I went into details. I should add he is a very experienced angler, never puts his boat away and fishes the upper and lower Niagara at least once a week.
  2. An acquaintance of mine has lately been doing very well with walleye while boat fishing on the upper river. He launches at Nichol's and drifts the shore while jigging a white jig (no other bait)

    Fall????

Lots of sunbathers on the beach and in the water today at Crystal. Looked more like July
  4. I'm leaving for Shining Tree (Gogama) Grouse, fishing and possibly bear. Looks like it is going to be a great week.
  5. I understand completely Smerch, this getting old is a female dog. Golden years my ass
  6. Smerch, I think it's time we met. If you would like to try for walleye one day on Erie I would be pleased to enjoy your company. You have to bring the worms.
  7. You're absolutely right Tyler, although I have never chartered a boat here, it is nice to be a guest and not have to worry about trailering, launching, bait , tackle, fish cleaning etc. At the end of the day I'm tired yet now I have to load the boat up, bring it home, clean it up and hopefully clean the fish. It's a pleasant change to have it all done for you. The biggest thing, like you say, is seeing how the pros do it. We're never too old to learn a few new techniques
  8. You're living in the past Smerch. A lot of these charter operations on Lake Erie charge between 400-600 per person for a full day trip with a 20% tip apiece on top of that. Just check the websites for those who operate out of Sandusky in the western end. 5 of us chartered a 44 foot twin diesel sports fisherman in Mexico this past winter. There was a captain with his 2 adult sons as crew. They were very efficient, we caught about 8 fish altogether (20-30 pounders) and the charge was $1000 plus we gave about a $200 tip
  9. I would stay away from the pressure washer. Too easy to put holes right through it. I have not erected my vinyl top in the 8 years I've had my boat. It stays rolled up in its compartment at the rear of the boat. One day I checked in and it was covered in mold. Spray Nine heavy duty marine cleaner did a wonderful job and was very easy to use.
  10. Don't forget, you reduce that by half immediately
  11. The morning paper carried an article about a young man receiving a seven year sentence for drug dealing in Niagara. This Brampton resident was 19 and under surveillance when stopped in his BMW!!! Along with $40,000 in drugs, he had a loaded Smith & Wesson pistol in his pocket and a loaded Glock on the floor of the car. Did he have a restricted PAL and the proper ATT to carry? Did he go through the rigorous vetting and other restrictions required for the rest of us. That sentence should have been for the gun charges alone before the drug possession was even factored in. It is so frustrating when I listen to Trudeau and his trained monkey Mendocino spout all the nonsense how they're keeping Canadians safe by not allowing you or I to legally buy, sell or transfer our target pistols while allowing this travesty to continue. A few life sentences or deportations just might cause some of these thugs to think twice. As it is now, it is just the cost of doing business.
  12. A guy I know just told me that “Hippo’s “at Mohawk Bay is gone. Washed away in the storm . Can anyone confirm this?
  13. Best solution is Mr. Post Hole
  14. You're right Genec, I have my grandfather's old auger as well and it does a great job. He also had one of those I think they were called clamshell diggers that was good in rocky soil. Slow but got the job done. I think the one Tyler is talking about is the one that I used to use. It has a cart arrangement with the engine on it and a boom going to the auger. The nice thing was it had a reverse and I think it used hydraulics. You could drill very close to a house or wall but it was a female dog to maneuver around by yourself.
  15. That looks like a very nice job Tyler, you should be proud. You only learn by doing. In my day I built dozens of decks and fences and am well acquainted with the "one man auger". It's a one man as long as you're King Kong
  16. Sorry Smerch, I don't know anything about it. I was at my cousin's place and saw pallets of it sitting on the shop floor. He explained what it was and that he was totally sold on it so I decided to try some for myself. Never occurred to ask him how long he had been selling it.
  17. I saw it at Ag & Turf Power Sales on Mud Rd outside of Grimsby but possibly other places that deal in lawn and yard equipment carry it. Since I didn't know it existed, I never looked for it anyplace else.
  18. Like many of you I have always used premium fuel in chainsaws, weed whacker, leaf blower, lawnmowers, snow blower etc. to negate the problems that ethanol can cause in equipment that is only used occasionally and stored for long periods. Recently I was made aware of a product that is really quite amazing. It is a gas substitute called Aspen. It was developed in Sweden for people whose job entails working with this type of equipment all day and as a result would develop headaches and nausea. My cousin uses it at his equipment shop and he says he sells a ton of it to landscapers, the city, region, hydro etc. It is extremely clean burning and there is no smell. He puts it in every small engine he sells. He showed me the inside of carburetors and fuel lines run on ordinary gas and they had a white residue buildup but with this stuff they were clean as a whistle and the rubber lines stayed flexible. Over the past couple months I tried it in my own chainsaw, weed eater and leaf blower. They ran fine as before but what I noticed was that after sitting for days or weeks, they would start in 2 pulls. My two strokes always needed at least six to eight. The other big bonus is it has a shelf life of 5 years. At the end of the season you just shut it off, no draining the tank and lines or adding stabilizer, sea-foam etc. You can get it in straight gas or a 50:1 mix, I believe it is a 92 octane rating. The downside is it's about $40 a gallon but when you consider how little you use in some of this equipment, maybe it's not so bad. With ice fishing season just around the corner, I think it would be ideal in the augers. No gas smell on your, hands, clothes or in your hut. Just thought you might be interested, I am impressed. Wish I could afford to use it in my atv and boat Merry Christmas everybody
  19. For years I used a piece of 3/4 plywood across my 2 sawhorses but when cleaning 30-40 perch it was hard on the back. Several years ago I bought one of those fish cleaning tables with the sink that Bass Pro and CTC sell. I never use the sink, I bought it for the comfortable working height. When removing the skin from my fillets I still put them on an old cutting board because a gutter trough runs around the perimeter of the table and is completely in the way for this operation. The gutter sounds like a good idea but it is useless, leading me to believe the person who designed it has probably not cleaned many fish.
  20. My Lund has a 200 HP main motor and a 9.9 Bigfoot troller. In eight years I have had zero issues with the big motor but on the 9.9 I have had to replace the trim switches 3 times and this year the thermostat (stuck closed). I mentioned to my dealer that maybe I got a lemon but he said no, problems with the small mercury motors are very common. He said all Mercs over 50 hp are made in the states while the smaller motors are made in India and China, hence the problems.
  21. I agree with bigugli. They advertise a 35 minute crossing but that's the actual time for the high speed run under good conditions. What they neglect to tell you is the wait to board and leave the dock, then there is the slow speed taxi to where you can open it up. Then, when you arrive at Toronto Harbour, there's the slow speed meander to the docking area, the time to secure the craft and disembark. The 35 minute run becomes more like 2 hours in actual time. Plus, you have to drive to Port Weller, park your car then wait to board. In Toronto you have to leave the boat and then secure some sort of transportation to your actual destination, all this in often inclement weather. Tourists might do it once just for the experience but they are dreaming if they think they will attract daily business commuters. As bigugly said, it has been tried many times in the past and they all failed.
  22. Well for the first time in almost 50 years no one in my moose hunting party received a tag. It doesn't matter to me as I will be going anyway as it is only to our camp in the Haliburton Forest. If I was still going to Thunder Bay area I would definitely not be going. We will spend the time clearing trails, of which some are long overdue, bird hunting, bear hunting and preparing for the deer season the following 2 weeks. There are a lot worse ways to spend a late October week.
  23. I took several fly-in trips in the 80's, usually with Arnie from Hawk Air in Hawk's Junction or Cochrane Air Service. I never flew in an Otter, these two outfits used the Beaver. Taking off and landing on the water is an amazing experience. The fishing was always superb but like you said, you did have to learn the lake. Sometimes we took a split trip where they would bring us to one lake for Lake Trout and Pike for a few days then pick us up and fly us to another lake for walleye. Back then the trip was usually around $500 per person. You brought your own groceries and fishing equipment and they supplied the flying, cabin, and boats and motors. We never used a guide on the fishing trips but we did once on a fly-in moose hunt. To someone who has never done this type of trip, I highly recommend it.
  24. It really sucks that we're the old timers know. My 20 something neighbour told me her father-in-law is dying from cancer. But after all she said "He is 55". female dog.
