  1. Just did a 2 day charter on Long Point out of Port Rowan, 8 guys in a bass club. We tipped 50$ a day even though fishing was horrible, at least the Captain tried to get us on fish and still works as hard or harder when we catch only a few.
  2. Decoys, I've tried em all. Last season used a 3 bird spread with 2 'robots' spinning around including a Jake and a breeder hen. The big boy still hung up on me at 100 yards gobbling at my decoys for 90min. I'm not really sure all this expense makes much of a difference. It depends on the bird and his mood. One day they hang up the next they run full out into your spread, just gotta get lucky And I've had birds later in the season that were decoy shy - I'm sure of it. Good luck all you Turkey hunters out there, 12 days to go.
  3. Love that stuff, use it on my boat to my lawnmower. Really gone up in price(like everything else) $9.97 is a good deal these days.
  4. I use magnus bullhead 3-blade fixed broadheadsand aim for the head/neck area. Its a little smaller than the vitals but I lost a bird once and am a little arrow shy now. The way I see it, I either kill the bird instantly or have a clean miss. And I tell ya, there's nothing like sending a turkeys head flying through the air...lol
  5. I'll hopefully head out a few times, the property owner only allows bows so its quite a challenge. As for conditions Smerchly, I don't like a strong wind of driving rain, they still move around but have a hard time hearing calls. Turkeys smell very little, which is nice but their eyes are wicked. I've heard owls, hawks and of course coyotes take their share of birds. Good luck all, get killin'
  6. Appreciate the first hand knowledge, used to be a yearly thing for me. Then the plant moved to Mexico, most of my friends moved away for work....then Covid Now my little guy ain't so little and is interested in fishing, was thinking I'd take him, but quite an expense driving from Welland. Too bad it used to be huge with mostly fishing booths, guess ill save my gas money for something else.
  7. Glad to see another hunter on the site, I've shot both compound and crossbows. As time moved on - work/kids/wife etc. I've found myself losing the free time needed to shoot, shoot, shoot a compound bow enough to be lethal. No one wants to be wounding animals, especially bow hunters. I would recommend the crossbow and it don't get much better than an Excalibur, easy to change strings, no cam wheels or anything to really go wrong. Been using one Excalibur model or another for 25 years now, scopes are good and accurate and can shoot left handed if you need to - try that with a compound bow. But you should get a hunting spot before you make any purchase, it aint easy. Most of the 'open minded' landowners already have someone on their property and the rest are dead against the idea of hunting. Good luck, its a tough decision

    Long Point

Fished my annual 2 days out of Port Rowan with 8 guys on a party boat. Fishing was not great, only caught 15 or so between all of us over the 2 days but all were 3lbs plus. Really worried about the fishery in this area, last few years have been really slow fishing. The charter Captain said its been another bad year and now only catching big fish is a bad sign, seems slow all over the eastern basin really.
  9. Overheated maybe? Have a good flow of water out the back?
  10. If you have any cats or dogs, watch out. I know people who lost big, strong dogs to those buggers. One will keep the dogs attention and the others attach from the rear.
  11. Tough year on my end as well, all the tom's on my property are hen'd up and will not leave them. Very frustrating listening to them get led away every morning. Getting them in is only half the battle, hitting one in the head with an arrow is the real challenge. The landowner doesn't want guns on his property, oh well still nice to be outdoors. Hopefully Ill find a loner soon...
  12. 99% of us have done something "rookie" at a launch, it happens. Most of the guys are patient because we remember. Port D on the other hand used to give me fits, the current used to play havoc with bringing the boat in to trailer home. Saw a few boats get way out of shape and one actually hit the boat on the other ramp. Worst thing is I don't find it consistent at all, probably dependent on the spillway current. Eventually I got the hang of it and you will as well. All part of the process, good fishing.
  13. Wow, can drink a coffee and kill a turkey at the same time.
  14. Jeesh, it never ends does it? How about sending cops or bylaw officers down to fine the people who litter instead of taxing all of us who like the outdoors?
  15. Bought my season pass for the Pt Colbourne ramp a while ago, they're still taking money online. The problem is if its the only ramp around it will be crazy busy with boaters coming from all over the place. Then they'll use that excuse to close it, man I need to get on the water....
  16. The government has been cutting the MNR budget for years, I think we still only have one or two CO's for the entire region. Not that our license fees have continued to rise though. In my 30 years of hunting and fishing I've seen one, not a great deterrent. The States seem to put more of a priority on hunting and fishing rites, enforcing the laws fully. If you trespass to hunt in most States you could get jail time, here basically nothing. Unfortunately our rites as outdoorsman are not a factor for our politicians. How long did it take to get the spring bear hunt back after they cancelled it with no evidence of anything? That being said this Covid thing is pretty horrible, still hate to loose another spring fishing season.
  17. Wow, 320 acres. That's awesome, wish I had access to that much land to wonder. Go get em and good luck, been seeing birds strutting for a couple weeks already. Hope its a good year, with the mild and basically snow free winter we just had.... 🦃🔫
  18. Outdoor activities are permitted, just within your our household. Another words you can't hunt with your buddy, most guys hunt turkeys alone anyways. Golf courses are even staying open, but your group has to take separate power carts. More details below, I'm no computer genius - hope this link works 😂 https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-s-stay-at-home-order-your-top-questions-answered-here-1.5378157

    SMELT?

It is nuts down there, and forget about social distancing, shoulder to shoulder. Most are of Asian descent and the guys I spoke to came all the way from Hamilton/Burlington. I left about 12 inches between myself and the guys beside me - 2 guys showed up and squeezed in. And the fish are not even in thick, left with about 40 before I did something stupid...🤬
