Duncan Posted September 8, 2024 Report Posted September 8, 2024 From browsing some past posts it seems that Port Dalhousie may not be the most welcoming of places for non locals .With the cooler evenings lately I was wondering if various species where starting to hold in the channel . Not being a local is this a problem for fishing from the bank during weekdays .I am taking tomorrow off and need to decide if it’s Port Dalhousie or the Old Welland canal with a kayak or canoe putting in at the Welland Community Boathouse Quote
Tyler0420 Posted September 8, 2024 Report Posted September 8, 2024 Dalhousie use to have a bad rep but I think it’s fine nowadays. You kayaking the channel is Dalhousie? Quote

You kayaking the channel is Dalhousie? If I go there in the morning it will be from shore because I have never been there before so it might be best to get some idea of how it is . I am tempest to buy a smaller deep v hull if I can find one at a somewhat reasonable price .I think for fall and spring fishing along with the occasional Niagara sand bar and lower Niagara it might be a good idea . Duncan Posted September 29, 2024 Author Report Posted September 29, 2024 I will be back at the end of the week and would like to try some fishing on Sunday or possibly Monday . Are the salmon at port Dalhousie now in the inner harbour area . I may go fishing on Tuesday here ,it's the start of the national holiday so it may be crazy busy but I will just have to see Quote
Port_D_Guy Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Bad rep how? It may be when the crowds grow. I don't fish where the crowds (The Zoo) are. The only thing I can see is boaters fishing where bottom bouncers from shore are casting to. or Somebody fishing (float) or casting out of flow with the rest of the bottom bouncers. Quote

From what I have read it seemed that locals were not overly friendly to newcomers . The past posts from here and other forums seemed to indicate this . Not knowing the area and reading this I wanted to know if it was this way or if in fact it is not so . The (Zoo) comment is understandable and happens everywhere when salmon run so that’s to be expected . Cheers Quote
smerchly Posted October 10, 2024 Report Posted October 10, 2024 I check out Port Dal. today at 11 a.m. since I picked up some rolled roofing near the QEW . I didn't see anyone fishing on the west side. The water is tainted but bright colours may attract the fish. The east side is not the same since they dumped the huge rocks in the harbour , it makes it more dangerous stepping out to net a fish. I haven't seen people being unfriendly just the odd scuffle now and then it's shoulder to shoulder..... And as mentioned, there's some hostility happen when boats drift too close to the roe chuckers who cast their lines into the currents on the opposite bank. I believe that also happens at Queenston.
