Well it took awhile this year but i won’t be eating tag soup in january.

filled my tag with a nice young buck. Just about the perfect size for our needs.

The shot went in at the chest and out a little high and back. Not great but it got the job done.

only went about 30 yrds before falling over.

Well done!

i’m still waiting to try and fill my tag….a couple of medical issues prevented me from getting out for a month, but hope to be out the beginning of next week.  Getting old interferes too often with hunting time ☹️

I wouldn't pass up many. Last year the picking were thin. I mean the deer were thin for some reason and very few bucks. This year was totally different but I got ripped off for land at a really bad time. All the bucks showing up were nocturnal on the new property. Might go over to Buffalo tomorrow and grab one by the horns

It appeared to have been a major acorn crop this year. From the size of some of the acorns it looked like the white oaks dropped a bunch this year. In the past  when this happened, the deer didn't have to go far to eat...in many cases I have seen where they don't get far from the bedding areas because they have enough food. Traditionally in southern Ontario, we are used to hunting at or near crop fields where the deer will usually go for spilled grain, soy beans , etc. We try to intercept them on their way to dinner. This year all the deer I saw were in the woods...didn't see one in the fields. There were tracks made during the night. The buck I got was following a doe in the woods as she was feeding on acorns. Some of the other guys I talked to said they were not seeing deer like they used to. If they don't get far from the bedding areas to get enough food, they won't be seen as much. If you are like me, you usually don't want to spook the bedding areas so you don't push them out of the area because they don't have a safe spot.

in my area the deer stayed nocturnal for most of the season as well. All my trail camera pictures were at night until the end of the season when they started to move at dusk. None of my regular trails produced this year so i had to go on the ground. I scouted around until i found a trail where there were scrapes and put my lawn chair about 20 yrds down wind and just waited until something came along.

this is the second year in about 20 when i had to do that.

20241224_074924.jpgI had several nocturnal bucks in 89a as well ..I believe it's more the hunting pressure and corn piles and apple piles everywhere on neighboring properties that cause this as well as good acorn crop as mentioned by coyotehunter...I bit the bullet and harvested a big nanny doe on December 3rd and continued to hunt trying to fill my daughters tag ..2 days before the snow melted I took her in to my ground blind  early  about 615 ..put down a bit of corn and apples and left her on her own ...went for coffee and by the time I finished my coffee and drove back home she texted at first light and said she just shot..itwas only her 4th sit of the season ...this is her second deer ever ..proud father here!...

Congrats to her on the nice buck.

we’re allowed to hunt baited areas? I thought the bait had to be gone for 7days until you can hunt it.

Yes you can use corn apples acorns sunflower seeds anything plant based...anything synthetic as an attractant...no real deer urine..although I've heard stories about guys harvesting a doe in estrus and using the urine to get a buck...

Couldn't believe the amount of acorns from the red oaks this year. Unbelievable
