Good news stories aren’t easy to find. But there will be smiles all around during the annual free trout fishing derby.
On Sunday May 29th, Land Care Niagara and Windmill Point Park will be hosting a “Hooked on Fishing – Not on Drugs” event at Windmill Point Park, 2409 Dominion Road at Stonemill Road in Ridgeway.
This free event will take place from 9am - 4pm, rain or shine, and participants can look forward to games, hayrides and amazing prizes. The young anglers are asked to register upon arrival, and there will be free equipment to borrow for the day. Every participant will be entered into a draw to win great prizes, whether or not they catch a fish, and there will be treats and food available for purchase. Officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service will be on hand throughout the weekend to help the young anglers.
The derby at Windmill Point Park is sponsored by “Hooked on Fishing – Not Drugs,” an international program which uses fishing as a way to bring families closer together while also promoting sport fishing as a positive alternative to drugs. According to Bob Izumi, chair of Fishing Forever, there is nothing that puts a smile on a kid’s face faster than catching a fish. “That’s why I love to create opportunities for children and families to go fishing,” states Izumi. “Fishing is one of the very best ways for parents and other adults to establish productive and healthy relationships with children.”
Izumi's late father Joe introduced many children to fishing and, as a result, Bob has taken up the cause of using recreational fishing as a way to bring families closer together and to teach important life lessons to children.
