Tim Bromund
Got to the harbor around 1:00, set up between trhe long pier and where the breakwall turns in. 4-6" of ice, I would have expected more with all this cold weather. The harbor is full of smelt and a mix of perch. I fished until dark hoping the northerns would turn on at dusk like they often do. Caught fish all day, but had to sort through a ton of dink perch. Sometimes it felt like I was catching the same 4" perch over and over again. I probably caught 60-70 fish today on both minnows and mousies, kept 20 or so decent perch. The northerns never turned on, but it is early in the season for them yet. We usually have better luck for them in the late season, late feb and into march if the ice is still good. I did have one northern hit a hand line, but the 4 lb fluoro wasn't up to the task. Miserably cold, but a nice day none the less. Not a bad way to kick off the ice fishing season. I'll probably hit Lake Chautauqua at Mayville next weekend. Tim
