Tim or anyone else familuar with the area. Just wondering the other night on news 4 buffalo the best weather station there is they showed a bunch of ice huts beside a large ship docked in the harbour. Does anyone know what they are fishing for there and what the depth is? I've only fished the inner small boat and usually later in the season but this report had me wondering :( Thanks for any response

denis, they usually fish for perch around the ship. it is deep right up tight to the ship. the further left you go, it gets shallower.from where that picture was taken, to the left and around the corner, is the old unin ship canal.from what i read off another messsage board, a pile of guys caught a lot of trout, and some nice perch there sunday.

Denis,

that ship is out at the end of the dock with the old cargill grain elevators on it, just past it the water drops off to 30 feet or so. I would imagine they are fishing for perch. Never fished there myself, so I can't say firsthand.

As swifty was saying, the Union Ship Canal is a good spot, it is also over 20 feet and we have gotten a lot of nice crappie, decent bluegill, big perch and quite a few trout through the ice there. A 3 lb rainbow on a microlite ice rod with 4 lb fluorocarbon line through the ice is an absolute hoot.

Tim

oh by the way, from what I understand, that ship, which has been sitting in Buffalo Harbor for 10 years now, is supposed to be renovated into some sort of floating casino/great lakes cruise ship on your side of the pond. I wonder if it will ever happen.

Swifty

thanks for the site

Tim

Thanks for the info I think I'm gonna give it a go. Has the pike fishing been any good? There's been a couple around here but nothing like the late ice. Can you fish closer to the buffalo river or is that ice to thin?

Thanks

Denis, it's the same way here. Northerns have been slow so far, but that's typical, this is still really like first ice in the boat harbor. The pike really turn on in late feb and march, up until ice out as they move into the harbor to spawn.

you might be able to fish some of the protected inlets such as next to the Pier Rest. but I don't know if I'd trust the main outer harbor ice. At least I've never been willing to try.
