Fish, hunt then repeat

OUTDOORS

The coming of spring means different things to different people.

For some, it is the disappearance of the snow and return of the sun.

To Niagara's hunting and fishing crowd it is the return of the annual spring events and activities.

The Toronto Sportsmen's Show kicks things off in mid-March. The St. Catharines Game and Fish Association sponsors a spring salmon derby seminar March 30 at the CAW hall in St. Catharines. The seminar will help the fishing crowd prepare for the annual Spring Salmon Derby that starts April 18.

This is the 34th annual derby sponsored by this organization and

it attracts hundreds of participants from across Niagara and beyond. They also run a special free kids day fishing tournament. It will be held May 2 and registration takes place at the launch ramp at 61 Lighthouse Road in Port Dalhousie. Check out their website at

The Niagara Outdoor Show is the little event that has grown into a must attend, something for everyone show. The creation of William Whitehead, this show started humbly, but has grown to the point where the Optimist Club, on Morrison Street in Niagara Falls, can barely hold the number of vendors, displays and exhibits. Taking place April 4-5, it is perfectly timed for the cabin-fevered outdoor-minded angler and hunter. Another Niagara favourite is the annual Channel Cat Derby. This fun derby runs April 1 to May 10 and is organized by Ultimate Bait and Tackle in Dunnville.

The Zone 'J' chapter of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is holding its annual meeting at the Port Colborne & District Conservation Club April 4 at 9 a. m. If you are actively involved in hunting or fishing or simply want to help protect the environment, this is an organization worth supporting and joining.

The local fishing scene is warming up faster than the weather. Boats are working the waters close to shore on Lake Ontario for those early arriving brown trout. In the harbour at Port Dalhousie the shore anglers are picking up rainbow and brown trout.

Anglers fishing from shore or in boats along the upper and lower Niagara River are enjoying some great early spring fishing. This year's wild turkey season is also approaching. It opens April 27 and the turkey population is growing fast. This has been one of the most successful re-introduction programs ever. It is now common to see flocks of 20 or more birds all across the region. Congratulations to all those responsible for the vision and determination to see this program to fruition. The only real problem I can see with the success of this program is the quandary it causes for the angler and hunter. Do you go fishing or do you go hunting? This is the time of year when your boss begins to wonder just how many family crises you can possibly have.

Remember the ancient words of the great outdoorsperson, "Fish until you can't fish any longer, and then go hunting", or vice-versa.
