spiro
Sooo.. now don't get jealous but my business takes me to Hawaii for the month of November. I have a travel fly/spinning rod. 7 foot with 5 weight line, I know it is light for the ocean and may buy a rig down there but I was thinking of playing with smaller fish on the reef I will have some time to myself there and was wondering if anyone has tried fishing in Hawaii. Also what types of flies should I start tying for this type of fishing? I am living with a friend who owns a house across the road from a beach park, from the map it looks like there is a reef there. I will have access to a Kitchen, and am wondering what kind of fish should I target for a good meal? The location is across the street form Swanzy beach park. http://www.to-hawaii.com/oahu/beaches/swanzybeachpark.php Kinda excited about the trip.... Catfish
That 5 wt is good until a 200 lb shark smashes your fly. IMO, at least an 8 wt is necessary.

Horrorshowrot
Also I would definitely tie up some shrimp and crab patterns. Probably even a white wooly bugger or even bright yellow. Streamers will work good as well for predatory fish.
spiro
I may buy a 8 weight down there, depending on price, the rod I have here is a 5 weight and a travel rod so I think I will bring it. Shrimp, crab and streamers, I will begin tying them. Thanks, I will post pictures. Mike

Icehut
Hope you are comfy casting in the wind... it never stopped blowing when I was there for Xmas. Didn't bother bringing my gear, or fishing at all; woulda gone offshore fishing if I had the money. Hope you have an awesome time!
