NiagaraRiverFisher
If they are already in the St Lawrence they could be in lake O very soon if not already, this is very disturbing news , since these carp eat massive amounts of plankton, lets hope for a miracle here folks. #asiancarpocalypse ? yakfish
The carp in the article are grass carp. While still considered an "Asian Carp" that isn't the species to be worried about. Grass carp eat vegetation, they are not filter feeders. Also they can't reproduce at a great rate since they are sterile. Of course there will be a few that do reproduce but the number will be low. There is still some cause for concern since grass carp are a non native invasive species. The "Asian Carp" we need to worry about are the big head and silver carp. Whoever published the above article knows this. The picture used for the article shows big head carp, but the article is specifically talking about grass carp. Which is a different family completely. The only similarity is they are from Asia. Big head and silver carp are filter feeders so they destroy the food chain from the bottom up. And the reproduce like rabbits so they quickly take over a fishery. Fortunantly, they are not in the great lakes...yet.
Mike Pike
Ya, the article is talking about grass carp while the fish pictured are the jumping species in the Ohio River. Very misleading.
