Guest Fishingnut
Hi Guys, a few people now have told me that the majority of steelhead caught in the lower over the winter come out of US water in the Queenston area. Would you agree with this and do you think it is worth it to get a NY licence? Thanks for your opinions. Rob
Guest Brian Laketrout Cuthbertson
What I saw last year was there were more boats drifting the NY side across from Queenston. They have along drift there, were Queenston is a short drift. However thats about the only place I've seen them drifting there side. On the Canadian side I have seen them from Queenston to NOTL drifting a 1/2 dozen or more places. If your going to fish the Niagara Bar you should have a NY lic. nothing worse then looking over your sholder to see if your still in Canadian waters. Guest Steelheader
Yeah, most of the bar is in U.S. waters anyway, and the line doesn't go right down the middle of the river either. With the dollar the way it is now, a NY license should only cost you around $20, and is probably worth getting unless you're committed to staying along the Canadian shore. Fishin-nut
Ny State Lisences actually run from Sept. to Sept. Even though their are alot of boats fishing on the US side I find that the beter drifts sre located on our side. With Queenston being the only natural back drift through out this system. The Art Park drift right now is doing very well for lakers (hear that Brian laaakers) and some steelies. But their are days thou depending on winds that sise is the only fishable side

Guest Gill Finigan
$40 US is a lot better with exchange then a couple years ago. If you fish around here from a boat it's well worth it. My lic says Oct 1/04 till Sept 30/05. There's lots of good fishing on the US side, plus different seasons too. You can fish for prespawn smallies in erie in May. Some 7lbers picked up every spring with a good number of 6's. Alo not worth the risk of drifting out to far and end up with a fine or having your boat and tackle seized for fishing without a licence. You can also get them at Walmart 24/7 in Niagara Falls NY
Guest Brian Laketrout Cuthbertson
You can also phone 1-866-933-2257 for a NY Lic. takes about 2 weeks. If your heading out on L.Ontario on the US side the USCG is really checking boats. I got stopped last Feb. To my surprise I'm legal in Canada and not in the USA. I was told all boats no matter what size has to have flares, and an extra surprise a square cushion, for throwing to someone that has fallen overboard. I had everything else, waterproof flashlight, pee bucket for bailing,Fire Extinguisher,ect...

Guest Brian Laketrout Cuthbertson
Gill I was told by one of our CCG ppl. that before 911 the USA honoured our regs in there waters, meaning if were legal in Canadian waters were legal in thiers. Also if you launching out of Queenston in the dark and heading down river, watch for those USCG boats. Twice now I've seen them running with there lights off. Rob They will just right you up and escort you back to Canadian waters, and tell you to drop into there station and prove you have complied.
