Guest Brian Laketrout Cuthbertson
I used to use my old fly lines, then run mono off of that. Use a 2 in. nut for weight and I was good to go. Stick a willow branch in the ice for my rod. HI tec. stuff from the Martimes!!! FYI Most inland lakes are closed for ice fishing, and only a few rivers are open to winter fishing. Main species is the Hake (Cod) and Sea Smelt. Guest Ken
For panfish and small trout, I used to use 8lb Trilene XL...then it got too heavy for my liking, so I dropped to 4lb Trilene XL...but it's still too stiff at times, so I've been using 3.4lb Rio fly tippet. It's great stuff! Most of the time, you don't need to go too deep...so about 20 feet of the tippet tied uni-to-uni to 40 feet of my 4lb Trilene XL which is tied uni-to-uni to my 8lb Trilene XL as "backing". Tie your knot carefully and trim of the tag as close as possible to the knot, or else you line will get stuck on the tag LOL. It worked just fine. For my pike setup, I still have 8lb Trilene XL on it.
