We know they are starting to feed now as the water warms up . Another cold spell is coming with night temperatures dropping to near freezing (boo) ! .....might have to heat up that oatmeal ! .....Looking forward for more carp action .

they don't seem to be to interested biting yet i seen 3 carp eating the chum at least that's what it looked like

it took 3 hours for this fish to take the bait with a few hits in between not sure if it was carp or bullheads for sure smerch the water needs to warm up more

and the whether forcast is calling for more cool temps you can tell the fish was still cold one good run then he just didn't have it in him to fight very hard.

But that will soon change need some warm days and nights to get that water temp up.It was funny teasing the wife i took the the left over corn from supper

and after 3 hours we had found a fish that likes her cooking looks like i will be making my own dinner for a few days LOL :dunno:

I get the evil eye when I bring home a few cans of corn and a loaf of bread ......for the carp  ......and then I bought a 55 lb. bag of maize & picked up some sweet pine apple scent from Peter's ......wait until I start cooking it and sweet smelling the house up ! ....it could be worse !! :D

Judy still hasn't forgiven Rob and I for using the one crisper in the refrigerator for bait storage. In the fall there was roe. Now we have salties and 1/2 opened cans of carp corn for spring. A little later and it will be worms ( she really gets nasty if one or two escape).

save the flavor for your hook bait, not your chum :)

It may be worth a try to sweet smell the pond up a bit too as well as the bait .......

Today , on the spur of a moment , since the wind died off , I decided to try an hour or two of carping . I went to a spot where our late fishing bud (Mazz) has had some fun with carp . I chummed the spot with a couple hand fulls of corn before rigging up my rod & tossed the line in . I had a few small bites ....just lifting the line & dropping it & finally the rod began to bend slowly . I was thinking these were small cats pecking at my corn , but when I set the hook it took off like a truck & I knew I had a good one ! After 10 min.of hard head shakes & trying to keep the fish away from shore clutter it began to tire ....and my arm was more tired ! I caught a glimpse of the tail & thought I hooked a big channel cat .....finally after 15 minutes I landed the beast ....the biggest carp I have ever caught in that spot ! It was very close to the 30 lb. carp I caught last fall at Jordan .....no scale , no net , but a nice sandy beach to make an easy landing . Low and behold , the hook was in the eye socket , just catching a piece of the white tissue & the hook protruding the skin above the eye socket . I had my side cutter pliers & easily cut the shank & slid the barb out .....eye seemed to be ok , no blood & away she swam , soaking my pants to get even . That one was for Mazz !!

About 40 min. later I hooked another good one ,same slow bite , well over 20 lbs that put up a 5 min. tussle and a few good runs . It was a great 2 hrs. of fishing . A big old heron was feeding about 50' from me the whole time I was there & hundreds of cormorants were in the lake feeding on something ....smelts maybe ?

first carp .......for you Mazz .... :) .....a measurement using my rod was 32"....

2nd one ......(both on hair rigs-corn)

I wonder if that's what was going on with me thinking it was small cats but was indeed carp picking it up and letting it go

it wouldn't happen all the time every so often i think if it was cats i would have caught one the line would tighten then loosen off

almost like a catfish bite but nothing there

I leave a little slack in the line and when the line tightens enough to bend the rod , I set the hook . I get about 50% of my carp that way . Using a bolt rig may be quite a different story ! lol

Ya i leave slack in my line to and leave my drag loose as well when it takes the line and then the drag i tighten the drag as it swims away

then i set the hook to finish the job

What hooks do you guys prefer for carping? I've been using size 4 Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks on aslip rig, but I've lost a few fish the last couple times out. I just picked up a pack of size 4 Matzuo octopus hooks. We'll see if those work any better than the circles.

I like the French made VMC hooks , size 1 for my hair rigs . ...not expensive and they hold up well on those monster carp .....

I like vmc, owner, and gamakatsu for all my hooks got some size 2 Mustads and I'm gonna try those for carp but instead of mono or fluorocarbon I use about 14 inches of power pro braid in 20 or 30 pound moss green. I usually save what left of a 150 yard spool for carp hair rigs and the occasional kitty rig. If I'm fishing for carp in really clear water I would use a mono leader and smaller hook kind of like the steal head guys..... that is also a dandy carp there smerch

thought this was interesting some good reading

Good read gunner , lots of info there . I'll have to get some plastic corn to enhance the menu . Keeping the bait off bottom a tad helps when there is slime on the bottom too....the puffed corn also does this . I saw small bags of puffed corn at the Bulk Barn yesterday ....very cheap , and some oats for a buck a pound .

I've already stocked up on the puffed corn and the oats ... With the dollar store beside the bulk barn I also bought quite a few cans of cream corn and regular corn. I think I spent around 10$ Between both stores. The cashier must've thought I really loved corn...

I bought 4 cans of corn & a loaf of white bread there , on my way to the carp fields . I told the cashier who knows me , that the bread & corn were carp fishing bait ......She said "carp bait" ?? . I said , yes , I make corn-bread sandwiches for them .......
