knightfisher
The transmission in my cherokee has been acting up for the last few months. Losing overdrive from time to time. Figure no big deal, just let it go. Not a good idea. The jeep has close to 300k and my neighbour said to change the filter and fluid. Well it was either to cold or wet out to do it so I let it go a little longer. Then I started losing third gear, and second gear. Now it had my attention. Put a jug of lucas trany fix in it and it handled the problem for a whole day, then same thing, lost third and second at times. Thought, well now I done it. Fried the trany. Called three shops and everyone told me 1800-3000 to fix it. Every shop said there is nothing that can be done until it was remove and opened. I was told just removing the pan would show very little. Well now I am in apathy for not taking responsibilty sooner. Neighbour came over and again he said change the filter and fluid. Thought heck for 35 buck why not. Well as the fishing god is my witness, after doing this, the trany was back on track working fine. I couldn't believe it. I mean the trany was slipping real bad, and now it working fine. So, what I learned was maintain your vehical, and do some of the simple things and you just may save thousands. Daniel
Guest fishstick
Talk to Jeetmuck, he owns a Cherokee also. Maybe he can give you a few pointers. He knows mechanics like no other here.
spanky
A car only lasts as long as you maintain it. Hopefully you caught it in time... if you do end up having more tranny problems give Gary at Gary's transmission's a call, they're out towards Dunnville, but they are worth the drive... had my Torque converter/pump shaft seal and shaft itself replaced last summer and a Transgo Go shift kit installed for $1000. w/taxes (other odds and ends done aswell)... Mr. Transmission wanted nearly $2000. to do the same work... Keep praying to those gods that there wasn't any serious damage done
knightfisher
Thanks fishstick, I will do that. I have to replace the front wheel bearing next on the jeep. I enjoy working on my own vehicals but sometimes I find I open up a whole new can of worms. Hummm, worms, I should go fishing. Any and all pointers is always a help. spanky
blah, wheel bearings are nothing... we put an '01 engine in my '96 Grand Am (after i was told by several mechanics it wouldn't work) in my drive way, out with the old V6 in with the new one, plus several modifications to the engine and wiring... 27hr's later i was on the road and cruising... fixing cars is only as difficult as you think it is... mind you, i will never ever ever touch a transmission- too many parts and they have very tight tolerances. gotta do a new hub/bearing and rear shock mount on my car this spring.... and we gotta paint front/rear bumpers, trunk lid and rear fender (minor rust)... luckily my father in law used to own a body shop out in Fenwick on Cream St.... so he'll be doing most of the work lol
Guest boston
I won't touch tranny's either, anything but. servicing is OK,replacing a tranny is cool, but to open one up, I'd be lost and I've been working on my own cars since I was 16, Fixed the wheel bearing on the wife's cavalier last month, just didi the head gaskets on a 95 grand prix in December, like spanky said, cars are easier than you think they are to work on. glad to see you got it all worked out Daniel, Hopefully it will hold on so you can pull that boat around.
