Winter Trout Fishing

Hey guys, how's it going? This expands on the topic about the mono vs. braid in winter for trout, but felt that this needed it's own topic. I really want to get into some winter trout fishing when I get back at the beginning of December, but I've never done it before. I got a nice 8-9 foot rod for Christmas from my brother last year but haven't really used it yet. Aside from that I have nothing else. So here's a few questions if anyone could help me out (I'm making my Christmas list for this year!)

1. What size of reel (in terms of line capacity) would be suffice for fishing the Niagara River, Port D, or other areas like that?

2. I've realized that mono is best in cold situations, but what weight of line do you guys typically use? In the braid vs. mono post someone had mentioned that

they use 6lbs but this seems a little light to me for the size of the fish and conditions...but like I said I've never fished trout or in winter so I have no clue

3. It also seems that a floro leader is key, what size and length do you guys tend to use? Should it be thicker of thinner then the main line?

4. What size hooks are the norm?

5. Any other tips or gear that you'd suggest.

Thanks alot guys and I hope Santa reads this post for me!!

1 reel size don't matter I use a 2500 team diawa or my 1300 wiskers

2 I use 10lb mono in the winter berkely sensation is sweet line

3 6lb fluro is good you'll get alot more hook-ups with 6lb test but you gotta be gentle with the 12lb+ steelies :D

4 #12 raven specialists .......14 if your into it and on slow days ;)

5 In the winter the trouties will stack up on the slower drifts......and mid day can be your best fish'in if it's sunny and warms the water up a degree or 2 :(

no more hints :) ...hope this helps ya out

I used 3/4 oz jig on 3-4"black grub(sometimes white), and small spoon that is heavy enough to go down, I do get hang ups, everytime, but it is part of fishing the area, if one does not get hang ups, the lure is not going deep enough.

Many anglers seemed to be successful using trout eggs, but I don't have any for years, and Salmon egg also works in this case.

Most trout caught are between 4-8lb so using 6-8 lb is more than enough if you own a 9'+ rod. I also uses 4lb leader at times.
