St John's Conservation Area - Report

Been to the pond for the last two nights with the kids. Took us a while but we eventually sorted out what the trout wanted and we managed to bring home our limit each night. The boys then got to taste fresh pan fried trout on Monday and fresh grilled trout next. One loved it; the other preferred spaghetti.

Anyway, if you take your kids there and you want a sure thing, use 4lb test and the smallest black hook you can find like a number 10 or so. (they seem to shy away from silver, gold & coloured hooks) Then bait that hook with a little piece of bread. After trial & error we found that the best bread was English muffin since it seems to float better (floating bait seems to work better) and hold onto the hook better. (Might try bagel next?) For casting weight we added a twist on bobber about 4' away from the hook.

They hit this rig nearly 100% of the time. Setting the hook is the only challenge as the bread falls away from the hook very easily. But with so many hits you are virtually guaranteed that the kiddies will catch a few.

Here's a tip. Take a piece of bread and sqeeze just one corner of it, with your thumb and finger, to compact it. You can even fold the squeezed section together. This will give you a firmer piece to hold onto the hook and a fluffy part that will float.

Yeah, we went again this evening for the last time this season. Trout for dinner all week and we are all almost trouted out! Almost!

Here's a couple of pics:

Fish guts go to the chickens...believe it or not they LOVE chicken guts!

Then into a happy little belly. (The little bugger ate 3 of them!)
