Good To The Last Drop

<p>I just recently acquired a supply of grits for use as pack bait due to the generous help of a fellow NFN'r . Grits are well known south of the border as a fantastic carp bait. I can tell you this reputation is proving to be true for me.</p>

<div>Double Ultra Secret Swim Revisited.</div>

<div> </div>

<div>I went out today and stopped to check a few local swims. The water is still cold but I did find a swim with water temps over 50degrees F. It was the .......Double Ultra Secret Swim. </div>

<div> </div>

<div>This was one of the best days I have had in a while. After about a hour the fish came steady for the rest of the day. I was visited by a retired couple who were out taking wildlife pictures and woman told me the story of her getting pictures of grizzly bears in the Canadian Rockies.</div>

<div>The gentleman was kind enough to help with the picture taking of one of my captures. </div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1309600x447.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1309600x447.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div> </div>

<div>Here is what happens when I try to do self portraits.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1316600x448.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1316600x448.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div> </div>

<div>I think I'll just give up on them and settle for pictures of the fish in the net to give them some scale.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1314600x427.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1314600x427.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>You are captured. </div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1313600x447.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1313600x447.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>Then a man and a young woman showed up They had regular outfits and worms for bait. I told them this spot was pretty shallow and was really only good for carp. We began a conversation and I pointed out some spots where there worms might do the trick and it turned out the young lady was from Alberta and was working the summer on a fish census project in Hamilton Harbour . She underwent training on fish identification and begining next week she would learn small craft safety and get her boaters card. This would be finished by training on how to electrofish without frying yourself. Well I could not give up the opportunity to give her an earfull about the RBG and the carp trap. I hope she askes some pointed questions at the biologists she will be working with. She is thrilled to have the job and is amazed at the diversity of species we have here compared to Alberta. I really hope she has a great time. She said she was told the do a lot of the work at night. I gave her a CAG business card and asked her to keep in touch.</div>

<div> </div>

<div>There was a bit of a downer in the afternoon, when these two idiots came by throwing spinnerbaits for bass along the shoreline.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM13112600x446.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM13112600x446.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>As they motored over my line the one idiot looked at me and said " Carp" in an all knowing kinda fashion. "Yup" I said , then added " I'd probably be fishing for bass except the season does not open for another six or seven weeks." The two idiots kept throwing their spinnerbaits for a bit and then sped off. </div>

<div> </div>

<div>The fish came in all sizes from 8 lbs on up.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1312600x440.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1312600x440.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div> </div>

<div>They really seemed to want that grits pack. I mangaged three in the upper twenties and as the evening began to close in I looked at my pack bait and I had just enough for one more cast. It was barely half a handful .</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1315600x447.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1315600x447.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>I gathered it all up , packed it around my puff baited hook and fired it out there.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1317600x447.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1317600x447.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>I began to pack up. I took some stuff the car and went back to my rod. I sat down and locked up the reel. Ten more minutes I thought and then the fat lady will sing. My line began to staighten out and I lifted the rod to set the hook. It felt like a good one. Then it felt like a real good one. After a great fight I brought the fish to the net and grunted as I tried to lift it up the rock wall. This fish had some weight to it . It was big, real big. I got it onto the grass in a place where it could not roll back over the edge. I got the hook out and got my scale out. I weighed it in the net. 40 and 1/2 pounds, minus the two for the net gave me 38 & 1/2. Dam close to my new PB. This fish was longer than my recent PB but did not have the overall girth . It was a big headed beast though and made a perfect close to the day.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1318600x446.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1318600x446.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>A 38&1/2 on the last cast, it doesn't get much better.</div>

<div><a href="http://s588.photobucket.com/albums/ss325/hammercarp/Window%20on%20the%20Bay/?action=view¤t=HPIM1320600x399.jpg" target="_blank">HPIM1320600x399.jpg</a></div>

<div> </div>

<div>The harbour was good to me again. </div>

Damn......only ounces away from the magic no. 4-0 Lorne ..... another great post It looks like the harbour is the best place to get big carp in these parts . It looks like these so called bass anglers do not have any fear of being fined for poaching & that is because they know chances are next to nil for the MNR showing up . I doubt if you took close up shots of their boat reg. no. and shots of the lures being used , or even a video of these clowns , they could be fined . It is plain to see the odds are always with the bad guys ......it keeps the wheels of "justice" well greased . If we hit it right this weekend at Mohawk Bay in Deseronto, I hope to get some shots of the spawning carp in the big weed beds behind the island .

wow nice post !!! looks like alot of fun fighting those carp

You are sure right about the fight. Although the water is still cold and the carp are not at their fighting best it was a blast. When you hear your rod and line making creaking noises you know you have a powerful fish.

BOQ is one of the places I'd like to get out to for some carp. I think there are monsters in there over 50. The bay is incredibly productive with huge walleye and giant sheephead. Good channel cats as well.
