ron4blues
This article recently appeared on-line. Once in a while there's good news. The sub-text of course is that the battle is far from over: there are dozens if not hundreds of invasive species out there to fight. From giant hogweed to zebra mussels, from gobies to Asian carp. Didymo and purple loosestrife, the European green crab, and the emerald ash borer are also on the list. Most of these species are a threat to native species and habitat.http://ca.news.yahoo.com/asian-beetle-pest-eradicated-canada-152115519.html Here's another article that covers just a few of the many: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2012/02/23/f-invasive-species.html What can we do? Be careful with disposing of unused baitfish. Don't "flush" dead tropical fish or aquarium/terrarium plants. Don't flush roe from commercially obtained food fish. Know what you're planting in your garden and how those plants propogate themselves. Learn to recognize a potentially invasive specie and report it to MNR. Not all invasives are a serious threat, such as the freshwater jellyfish: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2012/09/18/freshwater_jellyfish_surprise_swimmers_and_boaters_in_ontario_lakes.html Others may even prove to be beneficial in some respects, but all are generally considered harmful to the ecosystem that they invade, as they compete (often very successfully) for resources needed by native species for survival. Dan Andrews
I believe the story has inaccuracies. I have seen these beetles in Fort Erie and up on the Bruce Peninsula. Perhaps a lookalike? It was back in those same years however 2006/
Dan Andrews
Oops never mind, after some research I'm convinced what I saw was a sawyer beetle which I've seen up north of Parry Sound also
scapulataf
Great! Now I can transport firewood again! Wait, I probably still shouldn't.
bigugli
Great! Now I can transport firewood again! Wait, I probably still shouldn't. All they will do is lift the GTA quarantine. There are other restrictions in place from Niagara to Windsor concerning ash wood and the emerald ash borer.
