Snags
Be weary of third party sites. Read the terms and conditions carefully. i know a few people that have been screwed as the airline may say YOU BOOKED THROUGH A THIRD PARTY CONTACT THEM. if you are flying within Canada there is not much for deals unless the airlines have a seat sale. if you are flying to the US or international it is much cheaper to look Buffalo or Detroit. Especially if you dont care about airline preference.

Snags
Third party sites have their advantages such as giving you the ability to compare hotels/airlines/car rentals but most major operations (hotels and airlines) have best rate guarantees through their sites, it wouldn't make business sense to let expedia sell your stuff cheaper than you do when they take a cut. Third parties can have their advantage if you are packaging things together (hotels, flights, car rentals). Disadvantage being if you need to get a hold of their customer service at times. I have heard airlines say YOU BOOKED THROUGH A THIRD PARTY CALL THEM TO CHANGE YOUR FLIGHT. They can also be advantageous on price point when they are opaque (where you do not see the airline or the hotel until you give them the money so you can not compare or claim a best rate guarantee) To get the best rates for flights, often you need to book 21 to 50 days in advance, airlines in Canada rarely drop their rates as the flight day approaches and their prices are built on seat sales. If the flight has 100 seats, 15 may be at the cheapest rate and when they go it moves up to the next level, and up, and up until only first class is left or the price point is insane. Much like during March Break and Christmas they know the flights will sell so base prices are higher to start. Unfortunately there is not enough competition in Canada to get airline rates lower like they are in the US. If you are looking at WestJet or Air Canada, assess the different rates and the charges you may incur (baggage, etc) as each rate category (Air Canada has 5, West Jet 3) comes with different perks for the flight (such as seat selection or checked baggage). Snags
Also consider time ... sure you may save money by taking two or three flights as opposed to a direct flight, but is it worth it to make it a 12 hour day in the airports?
