A letter from Bert Miller about Global Warming Climate Change

There is no doubt about global warming

ON JAN. 2, The Niagara Falls Review published an editorial questioning the actuality of global climate change. This opinion contradicts the conclusions of the UN Intra-governmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC), which was composed of 2500 of the world’s leading climate scientists.

In their 2007 report (www.IPCC.ch), the IPCC concluded that: 1) the world’s climate is changing and there is an “unequivocal” warming of the earths climate systems; 2) There is a high probability that these changes are due to human activities – particularly, increased releases of green house gasses.

Governmental representatives from 130 countries concurred with this report. In 2007 the IPCC and Al Gore were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change,” which has been characterized as the most dire threat that humanity has ever faced. Indeed, the earth is already committed to dramatic changes in precipitation patterns, species loss and increases in human and other diseases. If left unmitigated, climate change is projected to produce massive human dislocations and political instability, additional loss of biodiversity and economic impacts equaling up to 20 per cent of the gross world product Forever! (2006, Stern Review).

One wonders why an editorial committee would choose to promulgate doubt at a time when there is no doubt about basic facts and when, in our own best interests, we need to discuss how we must alter our collective behaviour so as to reduce the maximal impacts of human induced climate change.

I stand on the side of the growing number of "Global Warming" dissenters - like these scientists who are debunking the myths put out by the United Nations IPCC that global warming is man made more so that what I see as fear mongering by Suzuki and Gore.

QUOTE

The Republican minority of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee released a report with a growing list of over 650 international experts who soundly debunk the claim that there exists a “consensus” in science that human activity is causing a global warming.

The introduction to the 231 page Senate minority report states, “The chorus of skeptical scientific voices grew louder in 2008 as a steady stream of peer-reviewed studies, analyses, real world data and inconvenient developments challenged the U.N.’s and former Vice President Al Gore’s claims that the ’science is settled.’”

The report includes links to dozens of news reports, statements and studies, and concludes, “Developments further secured 2008 as the year the ‘consensus’ collapsed.”

The majority of the 231 pages, however, is composed of statements from the 650 scientists, meteorologists and experts who remain skeptical that carbon dioxide – or any other product of human activity – is endangering the earth through generating global warming.

Cooling the warming hysteria

By LORRIE GOLDSTEIN

This has been another disappointing year for global warming alarmists, which is why you haven't heard much about it in the media.

Global temperatures lately haven't been co-operating with Al Gore's simplistic claim in An Inconvenient Truth that the Earth's temperature rises in automatic lockstep with increasing concentrations of man-made greenhouse gases. Based on that incorrect premise, there hasn't been any warming since 1998.

This year, preliminary estimates from the three leading agencies monitoring climate change, the British Meteorological Office (the MET), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, place 2008 as the 10th, ninth and ninth warmest year on record, respectively.

"On record" means from 1850 (the MET) or 1880 (NOAA and Goddard), a flash in the pan compared to the Earth's 4.5-billion-year climate history.

Predictably, few media have noted 2008 is well down the list of "record" warmth. By contrast, in early 2007 when the MET predicted 2007 would be the warmest year ever, it garnered international headlines.

As predictably, when the forecast turned out to be wrong, few media followed up. MET ended up classifying 2007 as the seventh warmest year on record, NOAA fifth and Goddard, tied for second. Now, 2008 has come in significantly cooler in each case.

Finally, there's no such thing as an annual "global" temperature. It's a statistical average based on complex calculations, done in different ways.

To be clear, the world's leading climate change monitoring agencies agree the Earth is warming abnormally due to mankind's influence based on 10-to-20-year temperature cycles and that either all or most of the warmest years on record have occurred in the past decade. However, global temperatures are also affected by natural factors, such as ocean currents, now said to be having a cooling effect.

Someday, more media may realize you can't cherry pick information to fit the alarmist agenda, which most media subscribe to, and ignore everything else. But don't hold your breath.
