darkapocn
Hey all, I see all these posts about port d, martindale, port colborne, fort erie all about ice fishing and such... but curious, does no one hit gibson and moodie during the winter? have seen some nice pike pulled out of there, and pulled a few myself. personally wouldnt eat from there, but i know during the summer i have seen quite a few of the same people walkin out with stringers of pike or perch from both. is it out of season on those ponds or just not a desired ice fishing spot? OPG (Hydro) has posted L Gibson and the linked ponds at Beaverdams. So you are supposed to stay off the ice.

tmate
i'll go completey against what everyone is saying and say that it is a very productive place to go ice fishing...Although some of the members on this site will probably deny fishing there because it is illegal i have seen my fair share of members out there... If you are down there you just must make sure you know the area and where the current flows under the ice. these fish were caught last year during a qucik trip to the far end of the pond from the small green bridge...i dont recall the name of the road.... dont get caught lol ....ive heard of some hefty fines that have been handed out

THE SIGNS SAY STAY OUT SO STAY OUT!!!!!Big daddy Right on man didn't want to say it..but 1000% right For one as a user group, people shouldn't promote fishing in prohibited areas on a fishing forum like this one. Also note that many members of this board are members of different organizations that help protect and enhance the fishery in the Niagara Region, and also try and do what they can to help preserve fishing areas around the region as well. Some help the MNR with different projects, others help "police" our waters and are directly responsible for cutting down on things like littering and poaching in different areas as well. phiphntek
well said fellas. There are so many other legal , safer options in this area. Why bother going to questionable locations ?
AwolRJ
Isn't that where Rockfish caught his Musky a couple years back? I used to see all kinds of people fishing there on my way to work in the summer, never fished there, heard it was toxic. How did the perch taste? Guest IBC
The water is not toxic, however you want to be very careful. They have the signs up about disturbing the sediment at the bottom of the ponds .. so myself I would not eat anything from there ... but that water flows into the 12 mile system and eventually into Lake Ontario. Knowing some of the guys who are security that the OPG uses ... if you want to fish there and they see you ... hope they are having a good day because they prolly would not think twice about breaking a rod if they had to escort you out of the area. Also like everyone else has said ... know the currents .... that can be a fast current and very unpredictable as to how it flows. In the summer there is a water level fluctuation of between 2 and 3 feet easily .... if this happens to this degree in the winter ... the ice has to be a mess. If you choose to venture out ... Good luck.
smerchly
I went through Gibson ONCE up to my shoulders because the current had eaten the ice down to less than an inch . A week before , I was fishing for smelts with 5 to 6" of ice . I have never ice fished there again . That was over 30 yrs. ago & I'm still shivering ........brrrrrr
arkangel06
All I have to say is why bother when theres much better options around where you wont get a fine and maybe some fish you can eat. When it comes to currents i dont play with my life!!!!!
darkapocn
lol thanks for all the replies, think bigugli answered it right off the hop for me anyways... and i dont eat any of the fish i catch anywhere anyways. not a fan of fish unless its battered n fried haddock from fryin guys on lake st. =)
Dan Andrews
Thanks Big Daddy. I fished there years ago when the anglers and neighbours had a decent respect for one another. I'm tired of trashy anglers. As smerchly said, that whole system is unpredictable. And as arkangel said, there's way better options out there. And as IBC said there are signs there warning you about pollution. See you on Saturday on Martindale I hope.
