Erie Perch

With the weather co-operating lately, I decided to head out on Erie for a day of Perch fishing with a friend. It was a bit chilly and breezy in the morning but we braved the elements and set up shop in 62FOW SW of Point Abino. This is my first trip that I didn't have to look for the perch as we pulled up right on top of them. We dropped the anchor and fishing was steady from 8am till around noon when the wind died down and changed directions. We spent a bit of time driving around looking for a school and about 30 minutes later we were into fish again. We ended up with 53 keepers and lots of smaller ones that were released (If we got them off quickly they would swim straight back down and the ones that came back up we scooped back up if the seagulls didn't get them first.)

Later on in the afternoon I caught this guy. One hell of a fight on an ultra-light with 4lb test line.

My buddy said that I need to change my nick from MinnowMike to MonsterMike because of all the big fish on light gear.

I don't understand why people you such light line. What is the difference between 4 lb or 10 lb or 20 lb . Fish don't see/feel the difference but when you get a fish you know your not going to lose it because your using 4lb line. Just my two cents. Or maybe its because I use 100 lb super braid, when I get a snag the hook with break before the line :)

Too many jobs to catch up on that got skipped in the summer for fishing. If it stays like this all weekend the jobs might have to be put off again. From shore I counted 30 boats sitting in a pack off the breakwall.

light line sinks faster with smaller baits. if your fishing 60 feet with heavy line n small bait it will take forever to get there and you wont know if you are ther

I would use 4 lb.mono & an ultra light rod for those deep water Erie perch . My Sahara 750 would be perfect for catching them . I noticed the bulging eyes & bladders in their mouth caused by the water pressure difference . I believe using light gear & taking more time to land the perch will save the small ones that are released & at the same time , enjoy the "battle" from the jumbos . But , maybe in 60' , all perch should be kept ? :Gonefishing:

We found that the smaller ones that were released quickly would dart straight back to the bottom. Out of 50+ fish released we might have had 4 or 5 float back up. A few were scooped up and put in the livewell and a few the seagulls beat us to. Whether or not they survive long term I'm not sure but we try our best to release them.

The perch I cleaned from 60' water had not only their bladders out but some were bleeding internally. I would say that the small ones were the same and would die even if they swam away. I use braid when fishing that deep as it is more sensitive and there is no stretch. You can feel the lightest of bites and the hook sets better.

I'm going out fishing on Monday morning should i go to Port Colborne or Point Abino? Please let me know i would like to have a cooler like that.Thank you!

Take your pick...If out of Port Colborne go left and if out of Abino go right...Somewhere in the middle between the 2 in 60-65FOW is where I was at.
