Folks would try to skate from Clifton Hill down to the ice in a kind of skaters slalom, during the 19th century. In 1912 the ice bridge abruptly broke killing 3 people. Since that time it has been illegal to venture out on the river ice. 100 years later, climate conditions, the ice boom, etc..., make it unlikely that we will see such a freeze on the lower river.
