bigugli
Just another harsh reality of what happens when we meddle in nature. Most commercial fish farms are ecological disasters in the making.

niagarangler89
Are stocked fish farmed fish as well??? Nope, farmed fish spend their whole lives in pens, whereas stocked fish are just that, stocked into a natural lake, river, etc. Stockers still suffer from a reduced genetic pool though. bigugli
Stockers still suffer from a reduced genetic pool though. Not necessarily. If you rely on a captive brood stock, yes the genetics get weakened, like any other inbreeding. Stock breeding by captivure wild stock does not affect genetics. This is the method used for collecting salmon roe for Ringwood, and more than once for local walleye stocking by the Pt Colborne and FT Erie clubs, if I recall correctly. niagarangler89
Hmm interesting. I wasn't aware that there were enough reproducing wild salmon to sustain a 'wild' hatchery. I guess, technically, all these introduced species come from a severely reduced genetic pool though, as only a tiny proportion of the original wild population was used to establish the non-native populations that exist in our waters today. fishfight
More issue and cover ups by FDA and CFDA..Entitled Mislabled fish, Not Red Snapper and Not Tuna sold on most of what were being canned or sold at our stores. CFDA refuse to respond to enquiries as well. Maybe Lake ONtario Salmon or our carps are the least contaminated fish around us? http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2011/december/food/fake-fish/overview/index.htm http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/27/science/earth/27fish.html?_r=0 http://blogs.wsj.com/corruption-currents/2013/02/21/testing-finds-one-third-of-us-retail-seafood-mislabeled/
