Can't figure some people out

I just can't figure some people out. Went down to the welland river this morning before work for a bit. Went a spot I usually fish. When I got there I found 4 or 5 nice sized smallies that someone had caught and fileted then threw everything in the river fillets and all. Must have found worms or something  What I can't understand is that after the first one you would think they would have figured that all of them would be the same way, but to keep going and just discard them is just plain crazy to me :worthy:

Either an amateur angler, or an ignorant one. If you see anyone doing this again, either reem their arse off, or call the snitchline.

That's what I'd do..... :worthy:

People like that give the rest of us anglers a bad rap.

That brings up an interesting question ....I haven't read anything in the regs about throwing away wormy fish , weather it be perch or gamefish . I heard the worms are harmless but not too appetizing , and some people will not be able to handle eating them , so what to do ??? Myself , I flick the worms out and have Chilli over for dinner. :worthy:

It always bites to see fish go to waste. I have worked hard in the past couple of years to convince people that we should let most of them, especially the big uns go.

Worms don't bother me either, just as long as there is more meat than worms. :-)

Have heard some loons say that if you eat them they can start growing in your stomach. I have a hard time thinkin that they would survive the hot oil bath that I let them soak in .

Thanks for the report, glad to see that you are a concerned fisherman. I guess there some extra food for the turtles this evening.

I shot a big old moose about 10 years ago , took it to a butcher in Parry

sound , and he called my buddy to come check this moose out. It was full of parisites (worms) . Seems, this moose was being beatin up by younger bulls and had a few deep puncture wounds from the racks . They became infected which spread throughout the whole body. THAT , we could not eat ! what a waste of a lot of good eating meat ....maybe it went to feed pigs . So, it can happen to fish too,.......Smokin Joe...it may be possible he caught 5 bass ,and they were all dead or near dead when he cleaned them , then found worms . I can't think of any other reason to clean them up then throw away the whole bunch.

The worms in the fish are harmless if cooked. I flick as many as I can and don't worry about it.

The worms in the moose are called "moose measles" and are a parasite picked up by moose eatiing vegetation near a carnivore scat like wolf. We had a case last year for the first time in 29 moose that we have got. They are killed by freezing or cooking and are harmless and don't affect the taste. We took out what we saw when cleaning it (we butchered our own last year) and a couple of guys didn't want their share. The ret of us found no difference in the meat...just the thought of it is the problem.

Just wondering if whatever eats the fish(turtles, rats, etc) do they get the worm? I never really kept any fishing in the middle of summer, I thought if they had worms you could see little black specks all over there scales or is that just perch? How big are they do they get the size of a grub or wax worm? I used to filet lots of lake trout and walleye when I was younger and never remeber seeing a worm, just a little curious about it sorry I posted a novel.

They look like little specks of rice and you can dig them out with the tip of a sharp knife . Do this after you have filleted and skinned the fish so you can see them easier . We get worms in fish in the middle of winter ......Lake St .John north of the casino in Orillia has the worst worm problem I've seen !

It seems worms are more of a factor in shallow and stagnant waters as opposed to deep and cool spring feds waters.

Then again, it may be in the food that is eaten that is parasite ridden?

I think you're right about the food being parasite ridden, tommy. The river where I usually fish is pretty deep 35-45fow except along the shore line where it is only 1-4fow and moves very fast, yet most of the fish seem to have them along there. I have heard that they're clean around the marina @ lyons creek though :dunno:

I find it strange that L.St.John is reasonably deep , clean water and full of fish and the perch are loaded (counted 15 worms in one ) and yet, perch from the shallow water in Martindale and the Hendley area seem to be clean , except for some perch loaded with black freckles on the skin. I've seen perch from Madoc area lakes also loaded with worms and that water had lakers ,being a very deep lake . Maybe just in their diets ?

I'm a bit pissed at the guy who caught these bass. At least he could have taken them home to discard or clean. My belief is these guys are weekend warriors who have no clue or conscious about fishing and our laws. If you pricks are reading this, and I ever see you doing this.I will report you and then skin your a** and throw you in the river.

Sorry guys just a bad night. Piss me off. Good fishing. Scottydog

It is illegal to let fish fit for consumption spoil.

However, the definition of 'fit for consumption' is up fpr debate. This is why no one gets pinched for killing salmon for the roe.

I have a cottage on the Maitland just outside of Wingham. Its not uncommon to catch 20+ inch smallies there in knee deep water. Everytime I have filleted one there are the little white grubs in the flesh. Certainly doesn't take long to go threw and pick them out. Well worth the effort after a little sizzle on the bbq.

see i gotta disagree here. If someone kills a fish that they don't eat for what ever reason (not condoning this), I would rather see it go back to the river to feed the other organisms in there than to just go to fill up a land fill.

I think your avatar is the father to my kid here..... If you leave the wormy fish fillet on the bbq long enough , the worms will "pop" like popcorn and the fillet will be done to the precise temperature ! :dunno: All kidding aside Bliz ......if it doesn't look good , or doesn't smell good .....it ain't going down the hatch !!! My biggest problem with people fillet "on site" is alot of them throw the "left over" back into the water.  Com'on man, bring it home and put it in the green box..

26691[/snapback]

I don't keep what i catch so this doesn't really apply to me, but what is wrong with throwing it back in the water. Feeds the fish and other critters in the system. If you weren't there then when the fish died the environment would take care of it, so why not throw the left overs back in the water?

I agree. I think it can only help the river system by putting the unwanted nutrience back in. If the turtles don't eat it then the catfish will and sooner or later it makes it's way back into the bottom of the food chain. Just don't put it near the dock or popular fishing holes. Turtles scare the fish away. As for the green box comment I've forwarded your comments to the Elm street community around the landfill site. Ewe send more fish :Gonefishing:

The $hit-hawks, aka seagulls , would certainly enjoy a treat of entrails from any fish left near shore but not where people frequent. We used to clean up a bunch of crappie and walleye up for a feed at the French River , Hartley Bay , and we threw the guts on "Seagull Rock" . Well, within 15 seconds there would be a tug of war between the gulls, herons , and turkey vultures and the rock would be cleaned up spic & span in minutes . That would make a great video ! If it was after dark , the coons would get them.....your worms too if left outside in a flimsy styrofoam container !
