  1. I heard a rumor that Rankin construction has purchased the property on the East side from the Dam all the way to the first dock from the city, this is where we fish for salmon and trout.  Rumor has it, the company will develop the land for housing/condos, I wonder if fishing access will be restricted, I wondered why they never paved the parking lot but no wit makes sense....Any truth to this?

Funny thing about the eel ...I was talking to 2 elderly life time residents of Port Dalhousie who were walking their dog and one lady mentioned about the big eels caught there back in the 50's . some of those eels migrated way up into Short Hills . That's when the canal was open at Port , where eels could easily take the canal route or the four small "step" falls that ran beside the old "Rubber" factory as seen on the 1920 map . We had a ball there catching silvers every cast !

Got this picture in my Picasa Files ...had to add more contrast ...then snip it...As you can see there was a much greater volume of water at the 4 Falls &  "Lincoln Fabrics' had another building where we fished right beside it . At the base of the "Step Falls" we caught the silvers every June .  The water there was nothing but sewage , don't know how fish lived in it ...plenty of cats and carp and eels ......

Nice map! They should build a fishway to let the fish go up pass the existing dam, right now they are sitting ducks below both falls....Were you catching silver bass? My son caught one last Saturday about 1lb on a cleo...

Just got back from Port Dal....verrry windy , but from the south so casts very extra long . I had a good battle with a big drum that I thought was an eye and another good tussle with a smallie .  Water was cloudy and zero current which didn't help drifting the harnesses .

Lots of people coming with kids to see Thomas the Tugboat  while a parking attendant kept busy slapping tickets on their vehicles ....nice !

I have one week left on my parking pass ....don't know what happens Oct .1

...forgot to mention ....I had a large trout or salmon follow my yellow spinner/worm right up near the surface and just touched the worm !  It was on the silvery side  , got me pumped for sure !  I'm using a 10'6" light action rod .

Start fishing more in that area, seen a guy catch an eel last night, about 30 guys casting for nooks but no action due to the heat.   Also, seen carp, big bass and salmon jump constantly.  I bet you that you catch catch perch on minnows later in the fall of the pier with browns as a bonus...

I still have yet to land by first salmon. I have been out multiple 5+ hour nights and have only gotten 2 hits. I was thinking i might as well switch to bottom bouncing with roe to try to get them. Im think bound to hook up on a king at some time soon. (I hope lol)

    Where are you fishing?

In the Niagara river you won't catch salmon on roe bags, skein is the only thing that works especially cured in hot pink Pautzke.  Right now they fish are slowly moving, it has been a very hot late summer and the run is late in most areas.  Once the fish show up at the pool in greater numbers, start fishing skein...

I’ll resurrect my thread from a year ago.

Caught a beauty this morning.  The salmon are slowly arriving.  I was the only person down there today.  I went down right as the rain stopped and was nicely rewarded with a solid fight.  Not a lot of salmon jumping yet but this one did a couple times before I could land him.  22lbs or so.  Super fat!!  The pictures aren’t great because it was barely light out.

Once it got light I switched to bass and caught a decent SMB, who also jumped!

Nice hen, what lure did you use?

Shady what type of Boat are you looking at? We just picked up a Lund last year and couldn't be happier .

Brand new Lund 17.7’ with a 60H, not worth buying used LOL, same boat 20 years old goes for 60% to 70% of the brand new boat value, crazy!

  7. I just came back from a three hour shore fishing trip on the upper. Got three smallmouth bass on a three way.

if I had a boat, I would fish the lower right now for bass and eyes, boat control is crucial, I would fish a three way rig with plastics and would get tons of fish.  I learned vertical jigging on the Detroit river fishing eyes when I was 18 years old.  Fishing from shore is tough in the summer as fish tend to be deep.

I am planning to buy a boat in the next two years when inflation drops, but right now in the summer months it is grinding from shore until the fall when migratory fish show up...

You might want to add a 10 lb.rock to that rod holder SS .   I can see a frisky carp taking your gear for a nice ride down the channel  lol

You are also fishing at the gobie ranch  , nice fat Lake O . gobies that like corn  !  The 12 Mile has been flowing high and fast , and they have narrowed the channel with those big rocks so the channel runs faster now . I found I need more weight to keep my bait from moving and getting caught on the rocky bottom .

Guys used to fish for carp just in front of that white yacht on the left . That was before they rearranged those docks ...no good there now with the steel pillars .(loaded with zebras)

Weren't you last fishing Rennie Park  SS ?  I'll try the 12 again but  will use one rod there because the bottom has rocks and mussels . (and lots of current)

My reel is set to a loose drag so that the spool spins freely when they take the bait, I guess we have to find a new spot where they hold!

I fished Rennie in the evening last time I went, I find that they shutoff around 2:00 pm and I won't last in the sun more then 2 hours in this heat! Will be good float fishing for salmon and trout in the fall around those rocks!  The fish will be tight to shore away from the main current, plus lots of bait around...

  9. Started fishing Port for carp, lost one fish in about an hour on the hair rig.  Baited the area well with maize so will be back today after work.

Every time I reel in my line to rebait, the corn is gone! Is it the current or small fish?  Maybe I should start using dough balls for better efficiency...Some big fish surfacing around just need the right bait.  Also, with the rocks in front of the concrete pad, float fishing should work for them, as well as for trout in the fall.

The last time I fished for bass was at the 12 Mile using senkos , wacky rigged in fast water along rocky banks . The bass (some smallies too) seemed to be waiting to grab anything that moved in the rocks , including the odd school of minnows passing by ....then ,they would head out into the current and back current .

The bass are hard to find there now after I saw pails full of them taken .....I fish for carp at the 12 now .

We own a property on Rose street all the way to the creek path....,Used to fish it daily for bass with senkos but the fish have been gone for three or four years now, you think the water might be polluted?

  11. Actually no one was fishing, except for the fatz boys carp anglers in the back.  We fished from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm both days, can't stay there after 3:00 pm since the sun is a killer.  Chummed with Maze and fished with the corn from Petes.

I was looking over YouTube videos of people fishing trout in St.Catharines/Port Dalhousie and stumbled upon a video a couple guys fishing under a bridge. The video was posted on April 3rd of this year and has the title "Fishing Trout in Port Dalhousie". At around the 4:00 minute mark of the video, the guy appears (to me at least) to be unhooking a small, and tagged, Atlantic Salmon.

Here is a screen cap of the fish:

I know that long long long ago (over 100 years or something) Atlantic Salmon used to flourish in lake Ontario. Is there stocking, or something else going on here?

I would love to get your opinions on this, as well as the rules and regulations surrounding these fish here in Southern Ontario.

    Here is the YouTube link:

That looks like a small brown.

  13. Good stuff with the parking....The beach is really nice since we live close by.  Just wait until everything is built at Port, doesn't look good for the shore anglers, guys are already adjusting to boat fishing the harbor.

They definitely disturbed the original fish habitat but it will take some time before the fish adjust to the new home:)

  14. I fished at Pierpoint Park yesterday, water was low and clear, no fish. Seems that this area lacks shade and trees, the sun was just beating the river like a furnace.

Any suggestions where the fish would be this time of year? I will try at the end of line 6 today, "Blondies".
