Is David Miller really that stupid?

miller.jpg Is Mayor Miller really that stupid?

I doubt it. More like very careful and scapegoating in political safety zone.

Does Davis Miller realize his City has a sickness? He seems to be attempting to treat a symptom instead of the illness! Hand guns or guns in general are not Toronto's problem. The problem is one that affects many big diverse cities. People who sometimes suffer from mental illness, econmic hardship, addiction, lack of education, poor upbringing, and suffer from hopelessness, homelessness, desparation and victimization coupled with the glorification of a gangster lifestyle. This is emphasized by music, television and other types of entertainment media creating a complex disease that fuels the drug trade and hence territorial disputes.

David's admission that he believes that shutting down "that hobby" will help, demonstrates that he clearly doesn't see the big picture or doesn't want to. He may be afraid if he tries to tackle the real culprits, he may become one of the statistics or run into some damaging unpopular politics. Instead he choses to make an enemy from what would be a logical ally. No legal gun owner or club wants to see another human being endangered or harmed by a gun and would partner to prevent violence in order to protect their own interests.

So why does David Miller not give equal airtime to subway pushings, nightclub stabbings, sexual assaults or auto related fatalities? Because he really does believe gun violence is something he can easilly handle with simple legislation!

But wait, before you bash the Mayor for his ignorance, understand that he is in the hot seat, with no real answers, with a justice system that doesn't work and critics expecting him to do something about it right now, but what? :worthy: I haven't any answers to give him but I can guess who does. Who knows more about guns, where they are made or orriginate and what they're capable of doing, then the gun enthusiests and clubs? If only that bridge weren't already burned.

Apparently David Miller can't see past either his own arrogance or that cliff that surrounds Toronto considered by some Torontonians as Canada. I have news for you David. Your Cities gun problems are as much of a stain through the gun enthusiest's eyes as the GTA's public approval of them. Picking on your supporters won't do a damm thing to change that.

Dan Andrews :worthy:

Miller is trying to make political hay. He gets to jump up on his soapbox and campaign for law and order and public safety. It also does not cause the taxpayer to dig deeper into their pockets as opposed to hiring more police or implementing more effective social programming.

ENGLAND

Pistol ban is relaxed for 2012 Olympics

LONDON (AP) — The British government relaxed gun laws Tuesday to allow shooting teams to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.

Britain banned handguns in 1997 after the massacre of 16 children and a teacher at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. The law includes a ban on guns for licensed sports, preventing domestic pistol events.

But Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has invoked special exemptions in England and Wales. A similar exemption allowed pistols for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said the government would make sure that competitors and officials can “possess their special competition pistols for the duration of the games and for any special warm-up events.”

'Epidemic' of knife attacks strikes fear in Britain

Updated Sat. Jul. 12 2008 5:36 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

An "epidemic" of high-profile knife attacks involving youth in the U.K. has police and government authorities perplexed as to the cause -- and what can be done.

The statistics seem grim as 20 teenagers have died violently in London alone this year, with knives often being involved.

And in one 24-hour period this week, five people were killed nationwide after being stabbed with a knife.

London police have launched anti-knife blitzes in certain parts of the city, but most offenders only face fines. Critics are saying that the U.K., home to some of the world's toughest gun laws, needs tough new knife laws.

"We have to be sure that when people are found with a dangerous offensive weapon like a knife, they'll get a proper punishment," London Mayor Boris Johnson said.

The death rate from knife crimes is nearly double what it was at this time last year and hospitals say the number of children under 16-year-old being treated for stab wounds is up nearly two thirds.

But the government notes that violent crime is at its lowest level in two decades.

London's police are taking the attacks seriously, even going so far to say that knife crime has become an even greater threat than terrorism.

Famous face involved

The sister of one of the latest stabbing victims is campaigning to help get knives off the street.

"The more people we can get to jump on board, to help us and campaign, surely one day, it's going to stop," Brooke Kinsella, 24, said.

Kinsella, an actress on the popular soap "Eastenders," became the face of the anti-knife campaign when her 16-year-old brother was stabbed to death in late June.

Two 16-year-olds have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Knife culture

Many of the youngsters involved in the killings had knives in order to protect themselves, they say.

It's not an entirely new phenomenon in the U.K. either. In the 1950s the so-called "Teddy Boys" were well-known for their use of switchblades and flick knives.

The teen rebels, from the rough parts of London, became known for their use of random violence and Edwardian dress, and were an inspiration for Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange".

Football hooligans have long been associated with the use of knives or other everyday objects such as cricket bats in street battles.

On Thursday, the teenager received fatal stabbings in his neck and chest. The arrested who were suspected of that aggression, were soon released, without further action.

Many murders connected to gangs

20-year-old Thomas Coombes Duffield was stabbed in his stomach in West Bromwich.

So now what ?

A ban on Knives ?

Then forks and spoons.

Guns and knives don't kill, it's the low lifes that do.

Banning these will not address the real problem.

In our vehicles you may find a crescent wrench , a tire iron , golf club , baseball bat , exacto knife or fillet knife , you get the picture , all legal or you can take a beer bottle , smash the bottom out & do a nice carving job on someones juglar ......Miller knows the % of people who own guns ....any gun, is very low , so he knows the anti gun votes would be very high . It's like city folks out voting the farmers on certain issues because of sheer numbers which the politicians rely on to get their way . This is not a new concept....Mr.Miller is a smart politico......they don't do what is right , they take care of #1 , themselves!

Is Mayor Miller really that stupid?

In a word, yes.

But, the stupider ones are the citizens of Toronto who re-elected "His Blonde-ness" to wreak yet more havoc on the city of Toronto. Before he tries this stunt, he should look at the root causes of all of the gun violence and address that before flying off the handle and trying a boneheaded stunt like this.
