  1. It's the wind and waves for me ...makes for a bumpy ride in my 16 footer ...trying to stand up setting  lines and landing fish can be pretty tough sometimes in a small boat when There's couple foot waves or worse...takes driving around looking for fish out of the equation because you can cover much water driving at 10 mph and the ride back is and hour or more depending on  how far out you fish...your back takes a beating ..you use all the muscles in your legs to stay on your feet when it's rough ...IL fish in the rain any day without lightning....I bought my my first boat at 16 yrs old and it was a 14 ft tinner with a 9.9..I wouldn't  listen to anyone about going out alone on erie..I got caught in 6 ft waves white caps and a thunderstorm for over 4 hours I layed down in the bottom of the boat with my life jacket on just drifting  from in front of port all the way down towards  the river to windmill...I don't mess with lake erie..several times when it was supposed to be calm I towed my boat down and never even launched it because of the flag blowing hard enough in the wrong direction..be safe gents...we spend more money trying to catch them then we would buying fish lol..but ya the temptation to go out is always there

  2. It Is with deep sadness and regret that for the first time in 23 years I did not make it out turkey hunting lol...I purchased a tag ...got real busy with my business working and other things around the house that I lost the urge to get up and go before and after work ...not to mention I lost my spot to the farmers nephew's 😕..hunted that spot 13 years and got asked to give it up just before deer season In 22...back to looking for a spot for the next few months bummer....good luck fishing anyways !! A couple late evening crappie bites lately though

With mild winter ticks will likely  be active early this season. Here is a cheap homemade spray that in my opinion is safe for humans and dogs.
*Avoid contact with face and eyes.

Dollar Store: 1 litre spray bottles $3

Rexall: yellow Rexall brand Listerine mouth wash

mix 9:1 ratio 9 parts yellow listerine to 1 part tap water

shake and spray lightly on base layers (socks, under layers…especially inside boot or shoe tongues and around waist line), tuck socks into pant legs, spray liberally onto all outer garment layers, if Turkey hunting..I also spray inside of hoodies and pant waistline and also outside of all gear including face masks…hat, back packs, boots including bottoms, decoy bags, cushion,  I carry a bottle with me to freshen up in the forest after a few hours. I have been using this for 2 years and it has been most effective! I still bring  2 large garbage bags (1 to put boots into and other to put clothes into for transport at end of hike). Still need to check for ticks after outings…and put clothes into dryer on high for 30 min to kill any live ticks. I find these little army tanks can survive dormant for days on gear and then find them crawling around in house or other days later.

Can also spray dogs under coat with this spray.

Note: not all ticks carry the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease…but the risk is high in Niagara, and ticks may also transmit other ailments.

I do not use DEET anymore after it took the paint off some of my equipment…in my opinion I do not think it is as safe as this alternative…but that is my preference.

    Safe Hiking!

I use magnus bullhead 3-blade fixed broadheadsMagnus.pngand aim for the head/neck area.

Its a little smaller than the vitals but I lost a bird once and am a little arrow shy now.

The way I see it, I either kill the bird instantly or have a clean miss.

And I tell ya, there's nothing like sending a turkeys head flying through the air...lol

That happened to me once also...using my compound I shot a Jake broadside ...thought he was done the arrow passed through feathers went everywhere he flipped around for a sec and got up and took off...I searched for bout 4 hours finding no blood or bird....that was with a rage broadhead...there's a possibility that the blades opened upon release and was a foul hit....no more rage ever..heard too many bad story's...although technology is getting better since then..

    Good luck fellas

To you turkey hunters ..... what weather conditions are best to hunt them ?

Does wind spook them and cause them to sit tight ?  Of course you want to be down wind ....

I have heard about owls taking them down while they were roosting in trees during the night ...true ?

I prefer nice quiet mornings  with the birds chirping little to no wind is best to get them off the roost...I try to find where they are roosting and keep at least 100 yards or more away from them in the tree cause if they hear or see anything they'll fly down in a different direction then it's tough to get them to come in less they are right fired up and the hens are out of sight...I've had some great Hunts in light rain though ..they seem to be more on the feed once everything's wet....I find over calling or calling loudly only works if they are far away ...if you can see them then soft calls and only one or two to start whether they are gobbling or not you wanna get their attention let them know where you are and then keep them curious with one every 20 minutes or so...if nothing shows after an hour I just stay quiet for a whole hour then IL call again.other times they fly right into.your trap and bang hunts over in bout 5 minutes lol....in 2019 I hunted several times with no luck  cause the birds had so many hens around they wouldn't respond to a call or a decoy....very last day of the season I spotted a lone bird in the field  so I raced home to.get my gear boogied to the field crept through to almost the field edge got eyes on it and placed a  hen decoy out of sight from the field..

made one soft call and waited less than 2 minutes and there he came searching and I nailed him...I actually enjoy turkey hunting more than deer with one exception and that's that the ticks  can be plentiful in spots and once I get one on.me and I feel it I.get the heebie jeebies and Im outta there lol..

I.once came home with over 40 on.me and my gear...now I use the spray which has kept them away pretty good..good luck fellas...remember there are new hunters that may not know how to hunt safely so ...I say this cause I had a young kid walk up on my decoy with his gun up and I yelled hey!...he felt stupid and I told him

Walking around stalking is a bad idea on crown land .

No they're more like a jet that doesn't float its just weight....these others are my home made version of snap weights although they only work for heavy mono ...they stayed on when I ran them off 20 lbs mono but with smaller diameter braid they come off when your fighting a fish ....just alligator clips with a piece off rubber over the teeth and the then heat shrink tube over that ..drill a hole put a 20230318_140742.jpgsmaller key ring and the weight

I do have a rod with 6 colors on it. I’ll be trying it out also.

Ya don't got any less than 40 fow with 6 color on...I've found that the tadpoles are good for getting a line down straight off the back and I usually run a 6 ft leader from that to the bait....has no resistance while reeling in either like a jet or dipsey although a line counter reel is a must to help guage line out for depth...I usually  let them.out till hit bottom. Once and give reel a few cranks and leave it...at like 1.8 to 2.8 mph
